Spragueville Man Guilty of Deer Poaching

A northeast Iowa man pleaded guilty Monday to illegally killing a trophy buck in Jackson County on Jan. 9.

Ronald Driscoll, 40, of Spragueville, will pay $5,000 in liquidated damages and do 80 hours of community service for unlawfully killing a whitetail deer that scored 163 5/8 inches, shooting the deer with a rifle, and unlawful transportation of the deer.

The deer was recovered near Porphetstown, Ill.

TURN IN POACHERS!

TIP

What score do the bucks have to have to make the cut on those HUGE fines? 163" obviously didn't do it.

$5000 and 40 hrs community service isn't considered a lot? Do you think he deserves to swing?

Don't think anyone was saying it isn't "a lot"? All I was saying is it's no where near those HUGE fines for the giant deer (maybe 170"+????) which is SOMEWHERE around triple the amount he paid or more. I actually do wish it were more than $5,000 though- maybe then we'd slow down the ramped poaching cases we see, so many examples like this, it is ridiculous "Deserves to swing"- what does that mean?

I'm sure it's not the first time he did it, just the first time he got caught. Good job for catching this dbag.

Anything over 150 inches it is $10 an inch although since he plead guilty he was probably given a minimum fine and more community service. Depends on the plea deal.
Some locals around here got busted, one person had 2 bucks with fines totaling $53,000 and the other had 2 bucks totaling $32,000 both are still in court so who knows what the final outcome will be.

They have an option of taking the community service in lieu of paying the larger fines.

buck shot illegally

If you shoot a buck illegally, especially in an instance where a rifle is used, so there is no (whoops) factor involved...then I think it should include

5 years banned from all hunting in Iowa (1st offense)
10 year ban from all hunting in Iowa (2nd offense)
permanent ban for the third offense

+ fines and community service. The ban of hunting will have a larger impact then the fine and community service in my opinion...

Come on, do I think you should HANG the guy?!??! That's a little extreme! I would just advocate cutting off his arms and legs! Let's be civilized here! :)

Ha ha! :D I despise a poacher as much as any of you. I just think that when you put it in perspective with fines for many other worse things, $5000 is pretty hefty for a deer. Depending on the financial position of the party involved, that could put his family on the street.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for "hangin em high" to make an example. I just don't want to see a person completely destroyed over an animal. I don't think the $5000 is to much, but I think it is enough for a 1st offense. I would like to see the community service be a little higher, that's more painful for many than the fine, especially if they have deep pockets.
Now if we could just get some trespassing laws with some teeth....

I like this a lot:way:, but shouldn't it include all species? I don't think a whitetail buck is the only animal poached...

Well, yes, it could include many more species. I have to say that whitetail deer should get more of a fine or punishment than poaching a pheasant or turkey, but I guess it all is game and we need it to end!
