saw the most amazing looking squirrel yesterday morning. i was driving home yesterday morning on my way home from work and right before i got to my driveway i saw this little black thing jump out in the road, yes i said black. well when i first seen it my first thoughts were crow, for i was still a little distance away at that time. boy was i wrong it was a freaking squirrel. to top it all off it was a squirrel which was solid black from the tip of it's nose to it's butt and had a red tail. no, i was not drinking. i reached over in the passenger seat of my truck to get my camera but he had made it up on the bank and out of sight before i could snap a pic this is the first time i have ever seen a squirrel of this color, i mean in looked like a tiny cat with it's tail on fire but it was a squirrel. now i have video footage of 2 albino squirrels and have seen 1 solid black one, but never a squirrel like this. i know the albino and solid black is very rare and i feel fortunate to have been able to see one, and i have seen many red/gray mix squirrels before. how rare is this type of double coloration? and has anyone else seen this same thing or something similar?

I think you were drinking and do not want to fess up!

I have seen both albino and black ones but have not seen any with a red tail. I still think you had one too many.

I'm originally from Southern Iowa and black squirrels are not all that uncommon down there. You actually see all 3 colors of them in that section of the state. I have yet to see anything other than the normal brown squirrel in central Iowa.

Around my dad's place in NW Iowa the blackies are nearly as common as the fox squirrels. Very cool looking.

In our area blacks have run the red out for the most part. I see a black squirrel with a red tail about everytime out. They are fairly common. Never thought of taking a pic and posting it. After all its only a squirrel. Maybe nextime.

Black with a red tail huh. He'd make my record book.

I love hunting squirrels with my longbow. My father inlaws property has a rediculous amount of squirrels. There is a black one with white ear tips there that has become sort of a quest for me. I have visited his hangout for the last 3 January's. I collected some of his tail hair on a Judo tip once. On one of my last visits I hit a branch he was sitting on and knocked him out of the tree. That was the last time I've been able to get within 20 yards of him. He is a little shy now

It's getting personal.

I have an opening on my wall, just for "White Ears".

Up until two years ago the only black squirrels I've ever seen have been townies, but now I see a few in the woods where I hunt. Never seen one with a red tail though. That would be cool.

in decatur county ive seen a few with white on them never all white and while in D.C. this past April while at the zoo i saw 3 different black squirrels, once which tryed to run up my leg to get some food so he defentally wasnt your typical iowa hunted squirrel. lol

Sure he is a typical squirrel. He ran up your leg because he was gathering _____(you can mentally fill in the blanks).
