State forestry vs mossyoak nativ nurseries

Anyone recommend one over the other when it comes to the state nursery vs a commercial one like nativ nurseries etc. Wanting to get some bare root oak seedlings this spring. Nothing crazy, maybe a 100 or so and wanting the best crop, so don't mind paying alittle more if they are considerably better trees. Side note, was considering some sawtooths but have read mixed reviews this far north. What's another good option for faster growing and something that holds its leaves into winter in southern iowa as screening would be a added bonus. Was considering northern reds, pin, chinkapin, and scarlett, however scarlett isn't an option from the state nursery.

Cold Stream Farm is better than both IMO for bare root seedlings.

I’ve gotten a few items from Nativ over the years with mixed results. The plastic bags they ship everything in tend to mold the plants and roots pretty bad. If you don’t get in the ground immediately they won’t survive. Never used for bare root trees however.

Both have their advantages IMO.

Nativ is great for rare options that may not be available from other nurseries. I have some of their hybrid white/red oaks growing and doing well in northern MO and the Kansas City area.

Will saw tooth’s survive and do well up there?
If so, I’ll mail you a bunch of acorns. All you have to do is push them into the soil or raise them in pots for a year then transplant them.

I’ve had great success planting from acorns but I’m in middle Georgia.

MDC trees are a solid option. In Iowa you have Kelly Tree Farm . They sell some very nice oaks .. including the Swamp Bur Oak—a really good tree that grows fast !

I called Kelly Tree Farm and was told they won't have any oak bare root seedlings this year.
