State Record Archery Non-Typ - Which Buck?

Was at the Pope and Young convention this weekend. It appears that the panel scoring committee lowered the score of Dave Gordan's buck by several inches. Their record book now lists Larry Zach's non-typical buck as the state record.

So is there actually anyone keeping an Iowa record list or do they just go by what the Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young Clubs list??

Maybe Harlan Swehla's buck beats them both removes any controversy.

If I remember right, Mr. Zach's buck netted 237 3/8, and at the IowaDeerClassic they scored Mr. Swehla's buck at 237 6/8. I don't know if they measured his at the P&Y convention, or if they have to wait till the next one?

I also seem to remember that Larry's buck was missing an abnormal point that would have brought his score up a couple of inches. Old buck, maybe you know more?

Here's a link for the Iowa Big Game Records .

All records are updated through the 2001-2002 season.

Pat, I noticed one other deer in the mix for the top spot for the NT Archery Catagory - here's the link.

Thanks,
Chris

The plot thinkens...

What does the "*" indicate in the Iowa listing?

maybe it means "pending", meaning it has been officially scored, but P&Y hasn't accepted the entry yet.

I found an old copy of the Iowa conservationist in my desk draw. The "*" indicates its a new entry.

I guess there's nothing saying the state records have to agree with the Pope and Young records. Its the hunters decision who he submits it to. Harlan's buck probably didn't make the Dec 31st cut off period for entries into the previous recording period for the last two years. I believe he shot it in November with a 60 day drying it would have been the middle of January before he could submit it. Maybe it will show up in their next book two years form now? Its a trophy regardless of whose book it printed in.

I heard P&Y won't accept Swela's buck because it was taken in a fenced in area but B&C does accept it. Does anyone know more about that?

I have not heard that, but B&C does not accept high-fence trophies either. I was wondering when a rumor would surface. Seems like everytime someone shoots a monster, there are rumors of somethin. I thought he shot it on some kind of military ground?

I THOUGHT IT IS CALLED THE BURLINGTON ARMORY. SOMEONE AT THE CLASSIC TOLD ME ABOUT THE FENCE AND ALL THAT. DON'T KNOW FIRST HAND THO........

I probably don't know first hand as I've never been to the armory but I was told it is not completely fenced.

I asked someone that has hunted there for many years about that this past weekend and was told that Pope and Young will accept deer taken from the armory. I'm not an expert that's just what I've been told.

I hunt where the swehla buck was taken in the armory, and only between 1/2 to 3/4 of it is fenced, the whole back side is just barb wire fence. also it consists of 20,000+ acres so i am pretty sure P&Y will accept the buck because the ones my dad shot out of there and other friends of ours were accepted. so i dont know if that helps but probably five miles on the whole back side of the place is just barb wire.

I agree with LIV4RUT. Another key point here is that the armory is not set up and managed as a "high fence" trophy whitetail ranch. The property in Middletown just happens to produce some monster bucks. Now Timberghost Ranch is a whole different story. My 2 cents.
