Staying In Your Stand - All Day

Many articles have been written about staying in your stand a good part of the day, certain times of the season make more sense then others.

Here is pretty good article in BowhunterMagazine on the topic.

Thoughts?

I think the guy has a good philosophy, especially if it's during the rut. I find myself doing the all day thing only during November, it takes me about a month of deer hunting to get "into the zone" where I WANT to sit all day.

After November I either have my deer and don't have to sit all day or I'm sick of sitting all day and WANT to go home!! Once muzzleloader season rolls around I enjoy the spot and stalk or still hunting much more. Covering ground is good exercise and a good scouting technique. Once I do pattern some deer I will sit until they show up, but during December & January it's tough, if I think the deer are showing at 1 pm I'll sleep in and go out late, easier on the body. If you ever ran into me you'd think it was the abondible snowman since I pack in my whole closet and wear it!!

I read an article once that dealt with the chances of seeing a deer-vs-time spent in a tree stand. Seems this fellow worked for an Insurance Company and dealt with actuary charts (probabilities based on statistical records). He began to compare this theory/technique to deer hunting. For example, the longer one sits in a tree stand...the higher the probability that a deer will pass by his stand. His point was that most hunters become impatient and leave too early...as a result they miss seeing the deer.

Works on the same principal as gambling on a slot machine....the more quarters you play in the same machine, the chances of that machine paying out begins to increase.

I agree with the being there(regardless of specific time period) makes all the difference.

It only takes 5 minutes or less for an opportunity to arrive and pass if you are there. And obviously without any great magazine articles or books, etc... during the rut if you are out during legal shooting hours anytime that eventis more likely to occur.

The bottom line is how much of your life do you want hunting to consume? For a family person or someone that has another life besides hunting, then sitting all day may not be your piece of cake.

But there is no doubt, that any time spent in the field increases the odds of a close encounter. And time in the field, if you have it to spend means real experience.
