Still Bummed

Well I set out all day Sunday and the closest I could get any birds to come in was 45 yards on eight different birds. They would not come into the three hen decoys. Had the bow and gun but still a poke and decided to pass on it. Reset up once but sat dawn to dark. Very, very hard to do with no gobbling going on at all all day.

I sat up in the open between three ridges on Monday for my second setup at around 11:00 and set out the B-Mobile with a jake and three hen decoys.(I missed one close to here last year and decided to try it before I headed home). One hen was put in the submissive position and I also took Thomas's idea and put fishing line on the B-Mobile and used it for some movement.

It was around 1-1:30 and was thinking how tough the birds have been and sometime they should change when I heard a soft yelp.
I thought great a hen going to nest. She came right into the middle of the dekes and on thru. Then a second hen came thru and I got to thinking two hens nesting?? There has got to be a Tom in tow. Looked to my left and there he was. Shi# I still had my bow on the holder. I thought for a second I have my gun right there behind my bow. Hel$ with it I came to shoot him with my bow so the bow it is. I grabbed it and pulled it back in the blind. I poked my head up and brought the bow up. He was still there looking right at me and was getting a little nervous.
I put the pin on him and released. (Too embarrased to say how close). He twisted and went into the air and came down and started to run. Like an idiot I flew out of the blind to chase him and he ran and took to flight. He flew and glided into the valley. After an endless search for the arrow (I was in CRP) and looking in the valley no bird. No feathers nothing.

Still bummed after hunting this long and getting this shot and muffing it up. Just hope I can get another into range these last couple of weeks.

Another thing after a shot don't chase him. Please read the first page of the site on recovering a wounded turkey.

A million thanks to those that I called and whined to and asked for help. Nothing pertinent here just wanted to vent a little in frustration while it keeps going thru my head.

BTW- The stats would of been 12" beard, weight 30 lbs.,and 2" spurs. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
In all honest he did have a heck of a beard but who was looking. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Keep at it Tony. We have all been there. It will happen and you will probably end up doubling... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

I don't know any other game animal that will piss you off worse than a stupid turkey! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif They can make you want to lob explosive-tip arrows at them. Hang, tough, it will happen. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

We've all missed a turkey before, not a lot of fun. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif Sometimes those closest shots are the toughest.

Keep after them!

I missed one at 10 yds a couple years ago after driving back and forth 3 hours each weekend to hunt (in grad school at the time) I still remember that sinking feeling. But...10 days later it all came together. Keep hunting hard..your just looking for the right 5 minutes..it will happen!!!!!

The best advice I've ever taken was out of a book by Byron Ferguson. He wrote about the concept of picking a spot on the animal. Common advice, but he went on to add that the spot needs to be EXTREMELY precise. A certain feather, an exact point on a seam, something the size of a dime or less and focus on it like it's the only thing in the world. I think I've always sort of know this but perhaps never gave it the full credit it deserved by truly putting it into practice. It's so easy to shoot for a kill zone...I've done it way too many times. I've really been working on this lately and it's made a big difference for me. Having said that, I shot one too far back this year and got lucky. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif Lost my focus and I think with turkeys in particular there's two main reasons for a loss of focus at crunch time. One is that they're often putting on a show at that range cause they're at the deeks and that show is hard for the brain to ignore. Second is that at 10 yds or so, it seems so much like an unmissable chip shot that it becomes easy to lose conentration and figuring that laying an arrow into a kill zone is good enough. Then again, sometimes we ALL just flat out miss. So goes bowhunting. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

It's not all bad Tony. With having a free weekend with no baseball I picked up some tags for me and my older boy. We went out sunday morning and had birds all over us but the hens didn't help us out. I was trying that day to get my son a bird and I figured I would try this week on the couple days I had off from games on the second team he is on. We decided to go to another farm down the road and let them know I might stop next week and see if could catch some late morning toms. Just get down the road and the trans starts slipping, this can't be good. Get turned around and limp it back to my buddies. Fluid is good and not burnt but the torque converter sounds like a gravel crusher. So now it sits in southern iowa having the trans rebuilt and the bank account $1800.00 dollars shorter plus the $100.00 on tags to sit in the woods one morning. And the wife and kids wonder why I am grouchy this week. Lately my life seem like that Hee Haw song (If it wern't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all). /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif

Can't add much more than I did on the phone or what everyone else has here. Persistence kills more things than desire, keep after them.
