Hey Everyone,

New to the forum and area!

Currently having to drive to Keokuk, IA from Ames to deer hunting which really limits the amount of times that I get to go. (3h 30m drive)

Any advice on finding closer land to hunt?

I know Boone County has a lot of public land near the river.
However I have not hunted public land especially for deer and with a bow. (I shotgun and bow hunt)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Still trying to get my first deer with bow.

Boone County public is good as far as public goes. I spent ten years over there hunting only public. If you can avoid the people you can find really good deer. The deer in my avatar was a Boone County deer I chased for three years. My brother eventually shot it in 2018.
 
Very good area, especially if you are willing to walk in deep instead of hunting close to the parking areas. And if you have access to boat even better.
 
Hunt the river and you won’t be disappointed. I also live in Ames and venture over to the Des Moines river once in awhile to change things up. Definitely some dandies out there.
