Strap-on stands and tree steps

For those of you that use strap-on tree steps and stands, how often (if ever) do you replace the straps? And has anyone ever had a stap fail? I have some stands that are 10+ years old and wonder if I should think about replacing them.

I moved a stand last summer with a strap for the main top attachment point. This stand had been in this spot for no more than 3-4 years but had been left out during the majority of that time. I moved it in August and the strap was junk. As others have already stated, straps are pretty cheap in the grand scheme of things so set aside some funds for some replacements, please.

As far as strap on Tree steps. I have had many fail. You really got to make sure you pull down on them hard to make sure they seat before you step on it. I have also had goodluck by pulling up on the buckle while pulling down. I quit using them more than 3 steps high because they scare me now. I may use a couple to get me that first 5 feet or so and then I got another 20ft up on the LW sticks.

As far as straps on stands. I finally got to the point where I need to replace a couple. Also the steel wires that hold the platform and the seat post I have had go bad. Had one almost snap in half this fall when I was 30 feet up. Only 2 of the 6 wires were still intact. If moisture gets underneath the rubber coating, they will rust and will fail. I believe chevy tail gates had this problem for awhile. I know my dad's failed. No different on a stand.

I also noticed my gorrilla stands seem to be the ones failing in this area.

This year I am thinking about buying all new Lonewolf straps. I have had mine 5 years or so now and just feel it is time to upgrade. Better be safe than sorry I guess.

If you are wondering if you should replace them just go ahead and do it. One less thing to think about come fall, you'll be glad you did.

I replaced straps on 8 LW sticks and 3 LW stands this year. I've been thinking about the cables between the seat post and stand. Will do that this summer I guess. Better safe than sorry......

I've fallen outta a tree (32') and not something I don't wanna do again :). I choose to have back-up's in place on all my stands- I put a chain and lock on (pry won't wear out for LONG TIME and I buy extra ratchet straps. Even if one strap fails, I have a solid 2 or sometimes 3 back up plans (more straps or chain). I have also had 2 ameristep tree steps crack- put in properly and I am 180 lbs- should NOT have happened.

Last thing you want to be doing is looking up from the base of the tree wishing you had replaced them and hoping your injuries are only minor.

What Mike said about the cables, that is a good idea as well. I have some over 10 years old that probably should be replaced.

I hear you on the cables. I typically leave my stands up all year (have about 15 out in the woods) and then check in the spring when shed hunting and again late summer when pruning then leave them alone. But I change my rachet straps every 3 years (MAX) and the cables, well that is a different story. This past fall I was checking on a stand and had just buckled in to the harness and i felt the stand move just a bit. So i was check around and sure as SHIET a cable snapped on me! So I check the other and it was rusted right at the compression clamp too. Needless to say, I check all my stands then. I had come older stands in storage so I pulled those cables off and switched them out. Now I soak that compression clamp and the lead section of cable in a rubber coating paint to seal it better. I had 4 other stands that were rusted at that clamp to the point I did not like it and replaced them all.

On the straps, go with the 5000 lbs straps. Those 2500-3000k straps last about 1 year maybe 2 due to the UV on them. It eats them away. The 5000 and 10000 lbs straps are a little more heavy duty and last a little longer.

When I take them off the lock on stand after a couple years I will use them in combination with newer 2500 lb strapps on my climbing sticks. Also I never, ever trust that pull start on the treestand. Two rachets per stand for me!!!

Hope that helps. But again, this is only MPO and what I do, by no means take this as gospel. It is just what I feel comfortable with.

i go no longer then 2 years, i had a friend this year that hunted the stand where he hadnt changed the strap in 4 years and one morning then went back to move after the hunt and the strap broke luckly he didnt get hurt
