my 2008 turkey season was short and sweet, bittersweet i guess as i want to hunt more..
My friend Al and I got into our blinds at around 05:10 am, it was an absolute beautiful morning to be in the turkey woods. about 50 with no wind and almost full moon. after being in the blind about 15 minutes an owl started hooting about 200 yards from me. with every hoot about 8 turkeys lit it up from the roost, it was cool. i started doing some soft tree yelps but everything sounded a littled bit far so i cooled it for a while. shortly before 8:00 i saw a hen go across the corner of the field where i was set up at. after seeing her i got a little bit more agressive on the old quaker boy split v. i didnt get any responses but shortly after my first series i noticed a head bobbing up and down out in the field where i was set up. i could only see his head and every time he stepped he disappeared as he was over the crest of a small hill. i clucked a couple times real soft and he popped his head up but i still could only see from about his neck up. as he walked off he showed no interest in the decoys and actually seemed a bit nervous so i just shut up and let him go. as he was walking off he got into a little gully and i could see he had about a 10 inch beard...i was sick cuz i could have popped his head off when he was looking at my decoys as he was only about 40 yards away. oh well at least i could hunt some more.. things were slow for a little while after this but i could still here a couple gobbling about a half mile away and across the highway from where i was sitting. i decided i was gonna give the quaker boy all my love and let them hear it so i let out my loudest and best series of yelps and topped it off with some cutting.. almost instantly there was a gobble about 50 yards from my blind. it sounded like it was to the east of me so i got set and was watching out the east window of my blind and i couldnt see him. i waited a minute and yelped really soft and he let another one out and instantly i knew he was north of me. as i looked out my north window he was only about 30 yards and in full strut coming right toward me. i decided to use my gun at the last minute cuz the neighbor is a real jerk about letting anyone on the land and i was right on the line. so as soon as i saw him i stuck old mossy out the window and it was game over...it was an absolutely beautiful day and after i got him i was kinda bummed to think season was over...but than i thought at least i can call for Al as he hadnt seen anything. After i shot Al called me on the radio and i told him that i had my bird and told him to come over and sit in my blind as he had zero action. he agreed and when he got there i told him i was gonna go to the cabin and get my camera and comeback and get some on site shots. i told him i would be back in like 20 minutes so i took off on my wheeler, got the camera and came back. i decided that i would drive right to him cuz i never figured anything would be around with the commotion... as i walked to the blind i see Al's arm out the window of the blind motioning me to hit the deck which i did. i got to the blind and he said one had just gobbled about 150 yards from the blind...needless to say i put my call back in my mouth and just started to sing when a gobble lit out about 100 yards from us. i told al to just sit tight for a few minutes and when i hit it again they gobbled about 45 yards from us. Al looked out the south window where i had shot my bird an hour before and told me he could see two gobblers coming up the ridge to us..i looked out the east window again and i could see the first was a nice tom with about a 10 inch beard. i was watching this bird and when al shot he took off. i asked al what the heck he was shooting at and he said the back bird looked bigger, needless to say he smoked it and it was a big tom but the beard was gone, all but about an inch and a half...so my 2008 season was over before 01:00 on opening day...oh well with the weather there getting there now i guess it was a good thing...the final tally on my bird was 20.5 lbs, both hooks were 1 1/8th and he had a nine inch bird. Als bird actually weighed 24 lbs and had about 3/4 inch hooks...you already heard about the beard... well thats my story and my 2008 season. Its only 5 months tell deer season opens...
my bird was 20.8 lb's with 1 1/8 inch hooks, and a 9 inch beard.. i believe the final tally is 58.5..... my buddies who is in the pic on the bottom on my right, his bird was 24 lb's had a 1.5 inch beard, (froze off i think) and 3/4 inch hooks...was a fun season all though short. thanks again travis for posting...i cant wait to see yours on here now...thanks
