Got out for a fourth season hunt with my son this morning. We haven't had much time to get out this spring due to a lot of activities. With the short amount of time I just bought him a tag in hopes he would get a whack at a Tom.

We got set up before first light. I was a little discouraged right off the bat when we spooked two birds off the roost while setting up. In all of my seasons of hunting this spot we have ever had birds roosting this close. Well, set up anyway figuring late morning would be better anyway.

The birds were completely silent all morning. We set up in an alfalfa field that is a travel area/strutting zone. We were hoping the toms would start looking in the open after the hens went to nest. At about 830, after periodic soft calling, we had a gobbler sound off quite a ways away. We sat another hour with no sounds. My son did his periodic check out of the back of the blind and very excitedly stated we had a turkey sneaking up on us. I peeked out to see a nice Tom putting the stalk on us. He covered about 50 yards in 20 minutes, finally getting close enough for a shot. My boy inches the gun out the back of the blind and dropped the hammer on a nice bird. The funny part is he was using my twelve gauge with 3.5 inch Winchester Supremes. He was in a less than stable stance when he shot and the gun knocked him back on his butt. We flipped the blind up to find the bird doing the flop.

Turned out to be a great hunt! The bird had one inch spurs on both legs and a ten inch beard.
