Suffering from

Im suffering from post archery kill depression. I shot a deer saturday night. The problem is ruts coming up amd Ive never filled my tag before Nov. 1st. Now all I can think about it what Im going to miss out on. I should have held out for another week or so. Why can't a guy buy two either sex archery tags? It doesn't make any sense. From what I understand only about 30percent of the bow tags get filled Im sure shotgun and black powder are much higher. It seems to me that filling two archery tags would be alot harder to fill then an archery and a shotgun tag. I dont know. I guess all I know is its about 344 days until bow season.

I think the IBA has brought this issue up on numerous occasions with the DNR. Some folks might feel that the shotgun hunters would get mad that bowhunters were getting two chances at bucks before they ever got a chance at one?

About as close as you can get now is to bowhunt on your late season muzzleloader tag. That is a change that was made a few years back due to some hard work by the IBA.

Remember when you could only get one spring turkey tag if you bowhunted. At least they've eased up on that. Give the IBA credit for that one too. Probably the reduced priced doe tag too...

With the more liberalized hunting that the DNR has allowed this year it might be time to bring up the issue again. Write your legislative rep and get the ball rolling....

Dbl, My buddy had this problem last year. He shot his buck about Nov.1 and this guys hits the stand several times a week usually. We got him a video camera and we doubled up during the rut. We had soo much fun hunting within whispering distance from eachother. It was probably the most exciting rut I've hunted. Not only did we see all the same deer, but we had them on video to watch all year long. It doesn't hurt either that he got great video footage of me taking my 140" 10 pointer coming into a doe decoy.

Get a video camera and a buddy. You will not regret it, and your friend will be forever grateful if you film his harvest!!!

All the doe tags were bought in the county I hunt.
I think I will take a camera out that would be exciting, but Im going to move my stands because if a monster came through I'd probably beat my self up for not waiting.
I talked to one of my buddies today and he wants me to do some rattling for him. I think that could be real goodtime. Thanks guys

This may be a dumb question, I don't know the regs in Iowa. Do you have to choose to either be a bow hunter or a gun hunter? Can you guys not hunt with any weapon you want? Granted, we don't have the overall quality of the deer that ya'll have up there, but when you buy your license here, you can take your deer with bow, gun or ML. If they do make you choose, I've never understood the logic behind that. A dead deer is a dead deer, no matter how you kill it.

We have to choose. Bow is bow only. Shotgun is shotgun, handgun, or muzzleloader. Late muzzleloader you can use muzzleloader or bow.

Our seasons have different lengths and different times of year for the different weapon choice. I wouldn't like it open to any weapon for x amount of time.

dblmainbeam - going out and rattling for your buddy is a blast!! deadeye and i did that last year and i got more excited with the buck i rattled in for him than i did with the buck i shot!!

Deadeye,
I didn't mean when it's deer season, you can just go hunt. They are still divided up among the different weapons, its just that you can hunt all three. I myself hunt with bow, ML and rifle as do others. Many people are rifle only

We can get two either sex tags. One being for bow season and the other being for one of the gun seasons. The antlerless tags allow us to hunt more seasons and take more deer, but as far as getting a buck it is limited to 2 (bow and a gun choice). There are also landowner tags available to allow even more deer to be taken.

Sorry misunderstood your question I guess.
