As the alarm clock rang at 4:45 on the 18th, I woke up thinking...it's morning already
. But I got up, wandered into scent-free-ville and the morning began. I made it to my tree in plenty of time and only scared one deer off the field...good luck already. I climbed into the LONE WOLF and sat for about 10 minutes when the first deer showed it's shadowy self. She (I think) proceeded to walk right down MY path, put her nose to the ground in my boot track, and instantly look right up at me. Whoever said deer don't look up, never sat in a tree. I'm thinking great now the whole deer nation will know I'm here, but she just trotted down the field a little ways and started eating. Whew!
That doe stayed around until it got light enough to see a little bit better. She wandered off and after about 20 minutes, a cute little 3 pointer, who I've seen a half dozen times, wandered through. After he exited I waited about 5 minutes, then grunted a little. I figured if he came back, at least I would have something to watch.
But then I noticed a brown and white rump sticking out from behind a tree on the other side of the field, just inside the timber. It then started walking and I saw antlers. I grunted again and knew he would come out straight across and 20 yds to my rear. He did exactly that and proceeded across the field. He got to my side of the field and began walking right up the field edge, so I drew and waited...
At about 10 yards to my rear (view through a little oak tree) he turned and was going to walk right behind my tree. CRAP! I let down and quickly turned around and got my bow up to draw again...TINK!! I forgot about my bow hanger!! CRAP! again!!
So I adjusted quickly and drew (I still cannot see him
). I looked through my peep at the spot where I thought he would walk through and was rewarded in seconds by his appearance.
I made a perfect shot and watched as he ran off into the brush...straight down into one of the deepest gullies on the farm.
He ended up running about 150 yards and landed in the creek with 10 foot tall banks.
It was a super morning and DoubleDropTines got to miss out on all the "fun" pulling him out of the ditch because he had to work.
He was a bit of a scrapper. He broke a brow tine and took a little chunk out of one of the little G4s. He also had a scar on his nose that was all pussed up. But needless to say...I'm HAPPY!!
