Hunters Reminded to Tag, Report the Deer Harvest
DES MOINES – The peak of Iowa deer hunting activity will begin Dec. 6 and hunters are reminded that if they bag a deer, that the head and antlers, if any, must remain attached to the carcass until it is processed for consumption.
There is a new tagging requirement for 2008 that requires a hunter who kills an antlered buck to place the transportation tag on the animal’s antler. It is recommended that the tag be placed on the antler beam either at the base or between two points. This new law was passed by the Legislature during their last session. The transportation tag must be attached to the deer within 15 minutes of harvest or before it is moved, whichever occurs first.
Hunters are also reminded to report their harvest through the DNR website (www.iowadnr.gov), by calling the toll free reporting number (1-800-771-4692), or at a license vender. Hunters must report their harvest to the DNR by midnight of the day after it is killed, or before taking it to a locker or taxidermist, or before processing it for consumption, or before transporting it out-of-state, whichever occurs first. The hunter whose name is on the transportation tag is responsible for making the report.
If no animal is harvested, no report is necessary.
