Well, I made my way down to Texas without very high hopes. This would be my 5th trip down to the Lone Star state and each trip has been tough to say the least. To compound that, the ranch owner I was hunting on called to say it was "the toughest season" he has ever had in 10 years. Taking a bow down there didn't make it any easier.
Well, sometimes things just go right for a guy! The first night I called in two longbeards and while they started to walk away, I hammered the first one at 25 yards. The other one started to spur his fallen buddy as he flopped away and I let a 30 yard shot fly and dumped him right there. I stood looking out the blind thinking.."That didn't just happen" MY FIRST DOUBLE!!!! The rancher thought I was kidding when I came out saying, "seriously???" The next morning, after pics, he found that the bigger bird had a double beard and was one they had been trying to get all year. I hadn't even noticed I was so pumped.
The rest of the day lived up to his predictions, seeing me sit in 85 degree heat for 8 hrs without any birds in sight. Tough day. I had to go home Tuesday afternnon but elected to try another spot Tuesday morning. The whole trip I heard 6 gobbles, but after just one gobble this morning I heard him fly down. I decided to not call again secondary to all the pressure on them and with fresh sign in front of me, I was hoping he was coming here anyway. Sure enough, 20 minutes later, he came over the hill in full strut and when he turned I laid him down. What a year. I really have had a blessed season and one I'll never forget!
Pics coming soon!!!!
