I took my first whitetail on Sunday morning around 9:30. I was fortunate to spend the opening days of the muzzleloader season with some very good people from Iowa Whitetail and was even assisted with the field dressing/skinning/quartering process.

The adrenaline was rushing so my pace count may have been a bit off but I estimated the shot to be 75 yards with a T/C Omega using a 240 gr. Hornady SXT bullet. She dropped within about 15 paces of were she was hit. The bullet entered just behind the right ribcage, passed diagonally through the torso and lodged in the front left shoulder without perforating any of the nasties inside.

It wasn't a buck but them tenderloins sure tasted good on the grill on Sunday night.

I just wanted to thank everyone that gave me words of wisdom and especially to the one (can't remember who) who told me that my Omega would prefer a heavier bullet. I ditched my 180 gr bullets for the 240 gr bullets and my frustrations ended and things grouped nicely....nicely enough for a good hit on a moving target at 75 yards from an unsupported position. It's not a feat for some but I'm more of a handgun/shotgun kind of guy.

Thanks everyone! This is my last hunting season in Iowa. This native Iowan is going away next spring. Thank you all for helping me prepare for my first successful whitetail hunt.

I'm gonna miss Iowa.

congrats on a fine shot!! where you moving off too?? hopefully you'll still be able to check in with us from time to time. lots of out of staters hanging around in this place!!

Congratulations on your first deer and on making a good shot. Don't appologize for taking a doe. An old doe is lots smarter than most young bucks.

congrats on the deer idsman75. you make it sound like your going away and never coming back. you can always check in with us you know. For the most part deer hunting is pretty universal. There are many deer hunting sites out there and I have visited countless ones. But this site is by far the best all around with members sharing info and tossing around ideas. You don't get very much of that on other sites. When you finally meet people you know only by their user name you find out what a good bunch of guy's are really here. good luck on you new travels

No problem Jeremy! We enjoyed having you come down to the farm. Give us a call when you make it back to Iowa someday. We'll still be here! Good luck with your 'career' move! Stay in touch, Lee.

TheGeneral--I left some adult beverages in the refrigerator. Hope someone drinks them before their expiration date.

I was born in Iowa and raised in Minnesota. I don't leave until May and I'll be back at least once a year depending on where I go next. I might get a late shotgun season tag and try to get one up in Sioux County with my aunt's husband. We'll see how work goes.

Idsman congrates on a good hunt.

are you hooked yet?Its highly addictive hunten with a muzzle loader and just plain old target shootin

I'm officially hooked. I've been drooling over a more "traditional" front-end-stuffer lately. It's a Lyman percussion rifle with fixed iron sights. I want to shoot some patch-and-ball with real black powder now. I heard that there are some pretty intense competitions out there with those truly primitive babies. I don't know if I'll ever have the patience for a flintlock.

I had the last of my loin on bakery buns for lunch today. Oh...wait...there....got the rest out from between my teeth....*swallow*.....gotta savor every last bit.

I took the rest of the animal to Thurston Locker in Thurston, NE. Work takes me out in that direction about once every couple weeks so I should be able to pick it up in the middle of the day if I have to. I'm always workin' when they're open. They're always closed when I'm off.

Has anyone ever had "dried venison"? I had some last year on bread and it tasted just like dried beef.

Anyways....gotta get back to working.

idsman besides my knight inline i have a lyman great plains rifle. Its a 1in60 twist patched round ball shooter.
Its a sidelock in 54 cal.the round balls are fun to shoot and accurate when every thing gets worked out.
round balls are not great at long distance for penatration, but up close at ranges from 50 to 75 yards they are lethal.
The roundball looses energy fast compared to a bullet, but you just have to get close.thats why a 54 cal is better in a round ball gun than a 50 cal.
Im no buck skinner, just a flat lander who likes modern and traditional muzzle loaders

Now that your hooked on frontstuffers we will have to work on getting you addicted to archery some day also. That way you can sit in your bow stand and dream about what bullet you want to try out next in the fronstuffer

buckknife--I'm so wrapped up with work right now I haven't had time to shoot it but I DID buy a new PSE Predator from Scheel's a few weeks ago. I'm already taking crap because it's not a "top of the line" Matthews or Hoyt or Bowtech.

Hey thats what i shoot,i bought a predator last year, ibos at 305,not super sonic but i a lot faster than my old golden eagle.
If i paid 650 to 700 dollars for a bow my wife would have it permently inplanted in my head by now.It was hard enough trying to justafie the pse when i had 3 other bows hanging around.
