Thanksgiving morning I filmed my cousin take his biggest buck ever, here is the story as told by him...
Here is a little teaser video of the hunt http://vimeo.com/32797395
I drove back to my favorite hunting cabin Wednesday evening. Before I even got there I asked Russell what the morning sets were going to be and to my pleasant surprise Jordan would be filming me in the "Above the Pond" set that has been hunted quite a bit this year. Russell passed up does three different times and also passed a nice busted up 10pt. I hunted the set two weeks ago and had huge activity around and under me. I also passed up some nice does waiting for that bruiser to walk by.
This brings us to Thanksgiving morning. It had been really foggy the past couple days so Jordan and I got up around 4:45am to make sure we had ample time to find our stands and get set up. Turns out this morning was perfectly clear with a light breeze. We were plenty early to say the least and it turns out being early paid off. About five minutes from the stand I realize that hmm my arrows arent in my pack....uh Jordan Ill be right back. 15 minutes of sprinting to the truck and back we are ready.
It was a great morning with turkeys roosting literally 40 50 yds away and making some noise about twenty minutes into shooting Jordan said the most beautiful words a hunter can hear, "Nacho we got deer behind us." A nice doe (I have a doe tag in my pocket) and a button buck were 20 yds away and closing following the trail we walked in on. They get underneath our stand when I look up to Jordan to see if he is filming and he gives me a thumbs up signaling me to harvest the doe. I mistake the thumbs up for a "Yeah sweet got deer here already" type thumbs up. I guess that is the second time I lucked out this morning because not two minutes later we heard loud crashing coming in from our left and lo and behold a big bruiser was chasing a doe and they were following a trail that would bring him within 30 yds however everything happened so fast I barely had bow in hand before he was stopped 60 yds away.
Now comes the intense waiting part that just drives me nuts. We grunted and bleated at this Brute a couple times and he definitely heard us but he wouldnt budge from his standing position. Confused we just waited...and waited...and waited...and waited...twenty minutes of this guy standing there and we finally notice a doe twenty yds from him milling around in the timber. AH HA now we understand. He wasn't leaving her for nothing. Time to cross your fingers and hope she leads him to us. Well since you all saw the harvest pictures you know that she did just that. She gets within 10 yds of us and he takes a ridge looping around straight downwind of us (remember i sprinted for 15 minutes earlier and a bit stinky ) Luck be a lady he kept coming without spooking. He stopped 20 yrds facing us just looking around for the buck and doe he thought he heard earlier FINALLY he turns and takes the trail to our left and I draw and get him stopped......THWACK!! (just say it really loud in your head or even outloud if you like makes the story better) he runs off trips and just looks demolished. Shortly after we heard the tell all crash.
