I just got back from the Iowa Deer Classic and I wanna go back!! It was so much fun, I was like a kid in a candy store! The first thing we did when we got there was go register my buck. Then we went and met Ralph and Vicki, what great people! We talked for a little while, got our picutre taken, and had to get up to see Michael Waddell talk. We got up to the seminar room pretty early and got nice seats. Then Waddell showed up and I couldn't believe it! He gave a great speech! It wasn't on hunting tactics but instead on why we hunt and what it means to us. It was awesome and with my dad and brother there (my two bestest hunting buddies) it just made us think how lucky we are and all the memories we've had together! Then after his speech we went and talked with him a little and got another picture with him. He is an awesome guy and always has a warm welcoming smile on his face, I felt like I had known him my whole life!
Then it was off to check out the rest of the show. We started cruising the booths and the Big Buck Contest. We seen my buck being scored and then checked out the rest of the bucks! Talk about some brutes, WOW!!! Then it was off to the Kisky booth, the highlight of the show! Don, Kandi, Lee, and Tiff were there and I couldn't hardly talk when I met them, just awesome to actually talk to these people! We talked to them for a while then bought the new Whitetails Taking It To The Extreme 5 and had the 4 of them sign it! Then we got a Gettin' Close shirt for my sister and had them sign it for her! Then we took a pic with me, my brother, my dad, Lee, Tiff, Kandi, and Don. I hope it turns out!! I always knew these guys were awesome people but they are just amazing! So nice and when talking to them felt like we had known them our whole lives, just truly amazing people! Then asked about some future videos and how shed hunting is going. Don said he found the sheds off another different Booner this year, if I remember right he said it scored 189". They said pictures should be up in the Season Report next week some time!
After meeting those great people it was off to talk to the DNR. I don't know if you guys heard about the North Carolina poachers that were near Woodbine but any way they were busted this year. They had been poaching on our land and the surrounding area and we were one of the probably few that turned them in, thank God they are finally done. We got to talking to the DNR and wondered if they had any pictures avaliable of the bucks that were taken. They said we'll do one better...see those on the wall...those are the 9 from this year! We took some pictures and I didn't recognize any of the bucks but the biggest one they had would have grossed around 180" typical, HUGE! Talk about disappointing. I'll post pics when we get them developed.
The rest of the bucks were from 120" up to about 150" was the next biggest, nice bucks with lots of potential. The sad part was they hardly got fined for the bucks, the DNR there most of the guys paid their fines before they went back home!!! I just think they got off WAY too easy but that is me, I guess they are lucky I didn't get a hold of them or the rule book. But we were kinda happy to see the bucks and finally put a close to that long, sad story. Then we checked out the rest of the booths. Bought a new rachet pruners, few shirts, new DVD that I already mentioned, and were real tempted to buy a lot more but some how held back!
All in all, it was AWESOME! Oh ya, Greg Miller and Larry Weishun were there but we didn't have time to wait in the HUGE line to meet them, wish we could have. Checked out the new TC Pro Hunter, what a gun! Said the Black Nylon with Stainless Steel barrel will run $800!!! They look amazing though!!!!!! Then went to pick up my buck and head for home! Seen a TON of awesome taxidermy booths. That is probably one of my favorite parts since I am new into doing taxidermy! I have a new respect for those taxidermist, they are amazing!!
I had one of the best times of my life! This was the second year in a row we have gone and I think we just made it into an annual event!! If you couldn't make it this year or never have made the trip you don't know what you are missing! Just a bunch of great people there, chance to check out some MONSTER bucks, see the new products, pick up some great deals, and the best of all meet the AWESOME people like Don, Kandi, Lee, Tiff, Ralph, Vicki, Michael, Greg, and Larry! Just an awesome day!!
