Today was probably the best single day of hunting I have ever been a part of.
It started off early this morning in southern Iowa where I was taking my dad turkey hunting. He has never killed a turkey before, and it just so happens that today was his 50th birthday, what better present than a big tom eh?
The morning was pretty action packed and we got set up on some gobblers early. We ended up having to pass on a nice tom that walked 20 yards behind us because we didn't have a clear shot. After seeing some other jakes and hens we decided to move on to another location. We ate some snacks, set up, and started sleeping. About an hour into my nap I about jumped out of my seat when I heard a gun shot and looked out to see a bird floppin by the decoys! My dad said he woke up and saw the big tom walkin around and got his gun up just in time before the old bird took off. I guess he deserves a little luck on his birthday.
My Dad:
10.5" beard - 5/8" spurs
Later that day my roommate (JD), a little brother to a friend of ours who is 16 (Jeremiah), and I took off to fill our bow tags. We set up near the place I heard all the gobblers that morning. After taking another nap in the double bulls we woke up at about 6 and watched some deer, only to get busted, and when they blew we heard a tom gobble. So JD, who had already filled his bow tag on opening day, started calling and rolling the video tape. Two big toms came straight over a hill and right into our decoys strutting up a storm! At about 10 yards Jeremiah and I doubled the two big toms! Both of us shot our first turkeys with a bow and got our first successful hunts on tape.
Jeremiah and I:
Our caller, JD:
We haven't officially measured the beards and spurs, but both toms have beards at about 10" and spurs at around 1". Oh, and not to mention, Jeremiah's bird had three beards!
Such a great day to be in the woods and share all these experiences with great people!
