This was one of the funnest hunts I've ever been on...and it ended with a great buck and an even better lesson... :way:

Hope you enjoy and I hope these hunts have kept even a few of you entertained until our beloved day Oct. 1. This hunt is found on our latest DVD - "If Only"

Trust me when I say you're not going to want to miss the final week with some of the bucks on our hitlist!!

The Cookie Buck

Awesome. I really like your videos, keep em coming, much better than anything on tv.

In alot of these videos I see the hunter give a grunt,,,to stop the buck, for a shot. Which brings up a debate I have raised before,,,to stopa deer with a sound or not. This buck here was a little wary to begin with, the sound seemed to really alert him, but he did not out-jump the arrow. As with most hunting questions, every person has an opinion they stick with. If you make a sound to stop a deer you put it on alert. An alert animal can jump, causing a poor shot. If a large animal is moving,, you definately don't want to risk a shot. Should you just let it go, or risk stopping it with your mouth? Some questions will never be resolved.

Also,,,once again,,,How old a deer do you-all think that buck was? Just trying to get a handle on aging by sight.

Loneranger I think it was a 3.5 year old but it may have been 4.5.

As for stopping the deer with a grunt... it is risky, but what is more risky, letting him go and either taking a walking shot or hoping he will stop in the right spot on his own? That's a question we may never really be able to answer because there are so many variables and we can't see the future in each situation. No doubt that buck was really tensed up when the arrow was released, but he obviously shot low and made a good hit. That's a lot to remember at the moment of truth when so many little things can go wrong and screw the whole thing up.

Well if that was a 3 1/2 or 4 yr old buck then I have been underestimating the ages of the bucks I have shot. I keep thinking most of my past bucks to be 2 1/2 yr olds. The buck in the vid, was wide but not very thick . I know you can't go by antlers, but his bod was not all that heavy. Tooth wear is supposed to be the best ager but if the deer eat alot of soft food their teeth don't wear so much either.

Taxi guessed him at 3 1/2 but he was bigger the year before because the guy who shot him shot him in the elbow the year before. The deer actually had a big knot on his elbow...Not sure he could shrink in a year??? Injury?? Nice deer nonetheless...

Very neat. I have enjoyed all your video posts, and the DVD's I picked up this spring at the classic. Thanks for sharing.

Well,, if that body was 3 yr old,,then I have been underestimating the age of my deer,,which is very possible.
