Just a Regular Old Joe wondering if maybe I can get a little input from some of the members here. I am really hoping that someone from the DNR will have a explanation for my questions and post something here.
Last year I applied with 1 point and was denied shortly upon searching I saw that one of the so called ambassadors of hunting in Iowa was awarded the same coveted bow tag with one point. No names pretty easy to figure out he and his brother(claims to be a resident ) make videos, sell hunts and have been buying and leasing up large parts of south central Iowa.
Luck of the draw I said Ohh well Not much later out comes a Bowhunting magazine and here is the same famous person pictured dragging out a hog of a Iowa buck. Hey wait a minute he was denied a tag?? Oh wait the GOVENORS tag!! But wait he was awarded a preference point but killed a huge buck in bow season then draws the next year with that preference point.
Sure doesnt seem right to me Why would they need to issue extra archery tags to a NR to promote the hunting any longer ?? Just doesnt make sense?? Is it because he owns and leases so much land ?? If thats the case then shouldnt any NR non celebrity landowners get a tag??
Now for the best part land they bought last year is being sold to NRS doubling their money. They sure have helped the taxpayers of Iowa havent they ?
I didnt apply this year with 2 points really had a hard time with the price increases and the gun to the head doe tag.
I think we all better hope that the dnr is using the license incease to purchase some more land because the public land you have is all thats going to be available to the non wealthy or non celebrities
ohh wait the celebrities want 2600 a acre so the Dnr better raise the prices again
Sorry for the long vent but I just cant see myself coming back to hunt. I love the people of Iowa and have made many friends there. It seems if you treat them fair they would do all they can for you. So for me its probably just a visit with the friends(True residents) I have made in Iowa. No more hunting there as it has become a sport for the wealthy/celebrity.
Ohh by the way the celebrity was denied again this year and was awarded a point Any betters on his chances of getting a tag ?? Is there any way to check back and see the last time he wasnt able to get a tag ?? Can anyone find a reason why he would recieve a celebrity tag again?
Someone needs to stand up and be heard or it will only be the wealthy/celebrities that will be able to afford to hunt in your state. Residents included

More proof that money talks.....

Like Iowa needs more promotion as a good destination for deer hunting.

483A.24(3) The director shall provide up to twenty-five nonresident deer hunting licenses for allocation as requested by a majority of a committee consisting of the majority leader of the senate, speaker of the house of representatives, and director of the department of economic development, or their designees. The licenses provided pursuant to the subsection shall be in additon to the number of nonresident licenses authorized pursuant to section 483A.8. The purpose of the special nonresident licenses is to allow state officials and local development groups to promote the state and its natural resources to nonresident guests and dignitaries. Photographs, video tapes, or any other form of media resulting from the hunting visitation shall not be used for political campaign purposes. The nonresident licenses shall be issued without application upon payment of the nonresident deer hunting license fee and the wildlife habitat fee. The licenses are valid in all zones open to deer hunting. The hunter safety and ethics education certificate requirement pursuant to section 483A.27 is waived for a nonresident issued a license pursuant to this subsection.

I get your drift and I understand the basis of your frustration. Here's my thoughts...

Until enough of the "regular old Joe's" cease to ascribe celebrity status to certain hunters, then this imbalance is unlikely to go away. In essence, "we" hunters fuel this situation when we buy the videos and gear endorsed by the "pros". I have also watched numerous people approach hunting celebrities for autographs at shows or seminars. As long as enough people support 'em, your gonna have 'em.

Here is the guy who passes on the apps to the 3 person team that makes the final decision. Send him your thoughts Ross.Harrison@dnr.state.ia.us

I too believe it's time to stop with these tags going to folks who can put in for the draw like anyone else. A better use for these tags would be terminally ill hunters.

i would LOVE to see these "goveror's tags" be done away with. i can't think of any reason that anyone should be given special status, when applying for a nr tag. special groups like make a wish, should be able to apply for the special tags, and even those wouldn't have to be any sex.

these tags have served their purpose, and should definately be eliminated

I like ISHEDHUNT's idea and would even go to the extent of people with permanent handicap, constricted to use of a wheelchair for the extra tags. These are people that deserve it. I'm sure if the celeb's don't get a tag here then they just move on to another state. And yes, quit buying those stinking video's.

My only fear with doing away with these tags is that these same people will only push harder to raise the # of NR tags in Iowa. They already have the land at their disposal, it wont make any difference to them on how many people are let into this state to hunt, so long as they get their tag.

I still am hoping that someone from the dnr would explain why its still going on . There is a demand for 3 times the amount of tags that are available why would there be a need for someone to promote hunting in the state of Iowa?? I say that the residents of Iowa need to start asking these questions and demand answers. These people are selling land that they have owned for less than a year and doubling their money. I bet the arent selling it to any residents. Besides what difference will it make soon there wont be any place to hunt but state land. These people wont even walk into a local bar or eatery as they are that disliked by the locals.

Folks, I have said it before and I will say it again. NR attraction to the state of Iowa is the result of Iowa residents who have become big time personalities in the hunting profession. They will buy and sell videos, property, etc. and move on to the next hot spot no matter the state because they have proceeds to do so. I know of two hunter celebs selling hunting real estate in Iowa, as realtors, at present, so expect more changes down the road as money talks. I appreciate the effort of the IBA and others but the inevitable is coming.
