Well guys, 4th season ended in a big bang. Muzzhunter and I devoted the weekend to filling our tags. Saturday morning we went to my grannies, and ran into another hunter and all the birds were accrossed the creek. after that we went to the good ole dairy bar to think up a game plan, I decided it was time to go to the "HONEY HOLE" which is a piece of public land, i always keep in the back of mind just in case my grannies doesnt work out. After blindfolding Muzzhunter on our way to the hunting spot, so he doesnt know where it is, when he turns 16 soon we got out and set up on a field edge. Boy did that night suck, heard one gobble didnt see a thing and the bugs were absolutely horrible. Upon leaving we decided we were not going to hunt there again because of the bugs, on the way out the motorcycle rally picked up and the fireworks started, to our suprise with each lound bang from a mortar going off, the birds started gobbling everywhere!! Okay so now we are hunting there in the morning. we got there early and made our stalk to where we thought the gobbling was, soon the timber lit up with gobbling but not that birds we wanted, we sat there and sat there then all the sudden right above us on the ridge he sounded, along with the other. we snuck up the ridge and he gobbled again now he was only 30 yards away we got on our knees and just sat there, non stop gobbling for the next half hour and the torture of watching him strut, spit and drum well into shooting hours. anytime now he was gonna fly right down in front of us, well he did but behind multiflora brush, dangit!!!!! then all the sudden the subordinate bird landed right in front of us, Now i know i told him to shoot when the bird hit the ground, but there was no shot, so i thought hes gonna be gone and i smoked him. Now he says, that i said hold on, then BOOM, I dont know who to believe there.
so that was the beggining of the ending of my season, we got 4 more birds in range for muzzhunter but it just didnt work out, it turned out the be the best response at calls i have ever had on the last day of the season on public land
the bird weighed 21 pounds, had a 10.5 inch beard and 7/8 inch spurs. heres a pic
