During a weekend of 5 inches of rain in SW Iowa I didn't think I had a chance of shooting anything let alone a buck. At time the rain was like a monsoon, just unhuntable conditions. Then on Saturday the weather broke around 3pm and I headed to the stand. I think that decision paid off!
All evening I had deer movement, but no bucks. Then at 5:45pm I heard movement in a corn feild about 80 yards away. I instantly new it was a buck by the body size, but couldn't see the rack. I didn't do anything the guy was coming straight towards me! And when I realized he was a shooter he was 20 yards away from me! I don't know if I got caught up in the moment or whatever, but for some reason I didn't have my bow in hand! So ever so carefully I reached and grabbed my bow and by this time he was ten yards from my stand! Good thing this stand was above 20 ft or I think he would of picked me off. Anyways I let the arrow fly and honestly didn't make a perfect shot, but I did connect good on the opposite lung. He walked 20-30 yards and bedded down and started to wheeze. I thought it was all over, then 30 minutes passed and he decides to get up and circle back around me. He trotted some 60-80 yards away and I heard him crash!
So I got out of stand and headed back to pick up my brother and his buddy. After an hour passed we headed back to track him, which is hard to do in a downpour, after ten minutes of searching we found him around 70 yards from my stand. I did it! I had shot myself a quality IOWA WHITETAIL!
