My Nebraska turkey season for spring 2010 is over !
I headed out to my favorite spot for a mid day hunt and wasn't disappointed.
After getting set up, a tom appeared about 400 yards away out just looking for love. I tried calling but I was calling into a 30 mph wind and he didn't hear the calls and headed back to the timber. About thirty minutes later a tom appeared at about 200 yards and this time the calls were heard. He slowly fed his way toward me and at about 75 yards finally spotted the decoys and game on !
At ten yards I touched off the flintlock and when the smoke cleared....................he was still standing there !
What the heck ? He slowly walked off behind me as I reloaded. After a few soft calls he came back and the second shot hit the mark.
I wish I knew what went wrong on the first shot but it doesn't matter I guess.
A basic 20 lb. bird with 7/8 spurs and 8 inch beard.
