Third Year is a Charm

My oldest son Chance has been on a 3 year quest for his first turkey. We have had numerous close calls and a few misses but no success until this morning.

With the rain this morning we decided to sit a comfortable and dry Lick Creek blind overlooking a freshly burned patch of switch grass next to our apple trees. It was in the middle of a narrow stretch - 30 yards by 100 yards long - and Chance commented with a smile, "we would have a close shot here."

We arrived a bit late as we waited out the downpour - I quickly set out the decoys and we listened to the woods wake up along with the distant thunder. At 6:30 we heard our first gobble and it sounded close. A short time later Chance peeked out the window and calmly said "there is a Jake in the field", as if he wasn't planning on shooting it. I was going to suggest he should shoot as I put on his ear muffs and handed him the gun. I then peeked out the window and to my surprise a spotted a big ole white head and a beard dragging as the Tom was already within 20 yards facing us and the decoys. Chance did a great job, took his time and made a great shot dropping the Tom in it's tracks.

High fives, hugs and a nine year olds first turkey!

Great shooting Chance! Nothing like waiting untill the last day. I know what dad must of been going thru, trying to decide on the right spot for the last day.

Way to go Chance...congrats :way:

Love how that picture tells the story of just how soaking wet the day was :way:

Congrats to Chance, I am sure that pops' smile was just as big as that one. Looks like you stuck out a nasty day and were rewarded.
