To all cam builders...

what boards are you using? I built three with the BG1 and two with the pix board. Gotta say I liked the BG1 due to the 9 volt life and general ease of building and use. The sss board is interesting due to the 1 to 1.5 second triggering.

Man, I guess I'm not going to be able to standardize using all the same boards!

Thanks,
Pat

I've built 2 with the Snapshot Sniper, 2 with the BG1, and 1 with the pix controller for a d380. I love the sss controllers. Except for the Olympus; the others are Sony P41's. The sss boards i have set for 1 sec trigger time, and are very fast. 1 of the sss is built with an ir P41 and no slave flash, and i am very happy with that cam. The pix was my first build and although it is 3 yrs. old, i still love how fast this cam triggers. A great trail cam with a fast trigger time. The only draw back is 2mp.

cedar, welcome to IW. I hear ya on the Oly's, I have two of those as well and they never have a problem. Is your sss/p41 faster than your bg1/p41? how about pix/p41?

Also, I was thinking about building my next cams with slave flashes in the case as well. Any experience with that?

It looks like the SSS and pix are the only two available. BG2 may be out in the next few months...who knows. I built about 8 cams with the hh1 and about 16-18 cams with the BG1 but only 2 cams with pix boards so I am more familiar with hags stuff. The universal looks like a good one and I may try that on the new S40 camera soon.

As far as slaves, Vman has done a bunch with those, maybe he will enlighten us with some of the tricks he uses....I have not done one yet.

I'm not sure about the pix with a P41. I think the reason the d380 is so fast with the pix is because the d380 is always powered with a 2 hr. refresh. That makes that paticular setup the fastest trigger time of all my setups. The down side is 4 aa batteries in the 380 will only last about 5 to 6 days. The sss controllers aren't really any faster than the bg1's, but they are really versatle in being able to control many different cameras without having to reprogram it's chip. Also the digital readout is convienant. Only downside with the sss controller is you have to set the walk test each time if you wish to use it. I don't use a slave flash with my ir unit. Night pics are good to about 25' with a P41 flash. That is good enough for my use. I hear the new Sony dsc-s600 has a stronger flash than the P41. That may be my next ir project. I disconnect the shutter on the p41 to get rid of the shutter noise on power up. I believe that has helped alot from alarming deer, especially bucks. I'm looking forward to building another unit with the bg2 once it is released.

Shredder, I have a pix uni board that I never got around to. I'll sell it to you cheap!!

Thank's for the welcome guys. I can't believe i didn't find this site before now. I love it. I just retired in Nov. after 30 yrs. working at John Deere. Now i have the time to hunt, fish, run my cams, and tend to my foodplots. This site covers it all.

Welcome Cedar Creek. I have been waiting for the BG2's to release. I have only built cameras with the BG1 todate and though I'd keep it simple and stick with Brian's board. I have considered trying a IR camera but again keeping it simple keeps it funner for me. I may look into disconecting the shutter on all of my P41 though. I would think an IR with the shutter disconnected would be pretty much as good as it gets. Do you gain enough to justify the extra input and work?

Ive built cameras with just about everything out there. Just tried the SSS here recently. Nice system, but I still prefer the BG1's.

I just got a couple bg2's for testing this week. Specificaly for video units. You guys will like this system. Only thing i wish would change is the fact that the battery holder is not on the board anymore. But this will make the system a little more flexable.

With the newer cams coming out, my guess is slaves will become obsolete soon. But some things are in the works and hopefully new controllers will be released soon.

Im sure you are wondering, The bg2's should be out in about a month!

do you think I can get away with a p41 IR unit without a slave o back up my regular flash vman? I could modify several I have not if it would suffice on flash distance.

probably could. depending on your ir material. It would be worth trying one. I havent done one yet though.
