GOOD LUCK!!!!!
My father and I spent 3 days hunting down there, and all's we did is pull our hair out! Hens, hens, hens and more hens! They are every where! I've never seen as many hens on the property as much as this year. And they were being very vocal too! I'm guessing, but i bet the ratio is 4 hens to 1 tom down there! Saturday morning we were working a tom on the roost, he had 6 hens with him! Nope didn't kill him, but around noon the hens slipped back to their nests, so that made it for some interesting hunting! Got close to a tom, but couldn't finish the deal. I'm planning on going fall hunting now try to get a hen. I encourage the southern iowa boys to do the same! It sure would make spring hunting alittle easier!
Good luck and good hunting!

Jason- You gotta get real close to the border, sometimes you can call a Missouri bird over the line. Seriously though the hens seem to be everywhere. My season this year made up for last. Opening day 0655 & then last Friday 0715 & a friend shot one about 0830 Friday. With so many hens around though we really felt lucky.

One thing about southern iowa, you sure see alot of turkeys!!!!! Hey Jason i will trade you some crappy public ground up here around ames for some prime hen infested ground down south

seems like when they are with the hens is when im stalking these days

pretty soon, i wont even need a call, the most frustrating thing in the world is a hot bird with a hen or two

I don't know about trading... hunting in sourthern iowa is my favorite place to hunt. I don't live down there, but I would love to some day so I could hunt there all of the time! If you don't know there is a area of public hunting ground! Its about 4 miles out side of eldon. Not to far from where we hunt. Its pretty big, saw two toms out in the rain there on friday. It would be worth a try some time! If you have never hunted southern IA, I think you will be amazed at all fo the turkeys down there! If u ever get a chance, watch some of the primos tapes. They hunt in van buren county all of the time, actually not to far from where we hunt. but southern iowa is truely an awesome place!

My farm borders on part of the Eldon wildlife area and I can tell you that Sunday morning the birds were not talking much. I saw 6 deer, had 2 coyotes run by the decoys, and had 2 turkey hunters walk to within 100 yards of my setup. Paradise can sometimes get crowded.

In that situation I would use a gobble call along with a hen call, you might find the tom to come right to you since there is not many toms around. good luck

Re: To all of the hunters in Van Buren county.....

If you are near a public area or if there is a remote chance there might be another hunter nearby, I would be very hesitant in using a gobbler call. I know they can be effective but there are too many people out there that shoot first and then identify what they hit later. This happened to a bowhunter in a state forest in this area a couple years ago. He ended up getting pellets in his face and at least one in his eye.

Yes, I would be very hesitant too, a good friend of mine and another good friend went turkey hunting for the first time on a public hunting area. they ended up shooting someone, thank god they didnt kill him. It's dang hard to believe a guy that you have went pheasant hunting and crow hunting with actually shot someone. the story goes they were calling in this really thick area. and when calling they heard some (shock gobbles) getting nearer and nearer along with some hen calls. The other guy who has never hunted saw some movement and told my friend they watched it about 45 yards out in the brush they seen a red head and turkey figure, the nonhunter said shoot it so my buddy did, they ran over there and he shot a guy with turkey decoys sticking out of his vest in an upright position while he was belly crawling, which they couldnt see through the brush. a very tragic experience and sure makes me worry who else is out in the woods everytime i hit a public area. Its hard to look a good friend in the eye and not help but think what an idiot, but yet at the same time its hard to believe the other guy was trying to act like a jake turkey walking through the woods

Yea, I'd be careful if I was on public property too!! I was thinking more about private land....but it does work!!
