Tracking deer with a dog.

dont believe u can... but why would they make it illegal?? Let me be specific, why would it be illegal to track a wounded deer.

I was watching a hunting show this morning and they were showing a guy with a dog that he had lost in Iowa 2 years ago. The Wenzels lost a deer and he flew out to help track.

I got my information indirectly through the game warden (Flynn) who is in the area the Wenzels hunt (They have a ton of leased land in Van BUren County). There's a guy there who has a tracking dog and uses it a lot. He carges $100 to come out and track and another $200 if he finds the deer. He told me he was 8 for 11 this year and the game warden knows about it and said it is okay as long as the dog is on a leash.

I don't know about tracking with a dog, but the Wenzels are not against shooting deer that are being driven by unlicensed, tag-less, non-resident hunting partners. Is that legal? I don't think so. And these guys are supposed to be such pure bowhunters.

If you are talking about the big buck they shot a couple years ago, I heard the story about how it actually happened when I was there last week. It's a little different than what has been going around. Legal? Debatable. Ethical? We all have to decide that on our own. If the story I heard form a local who hunts right along side them is true, yours is pretty far off base.

What was weird... I hunted on land that is bordered on two sides by their lease and I did not see a single sign that anyone was hunting any of the land for the entire week.

My story... off base?!? Are you kidding me? It's Gene Wensel's story. Read the article and tell me that what they did to harvest that animal was not illegal. Iowa law clearly states that to participate in a hunt all persons must have a licence and a tag for that season. And his particular "helper" was a non-resident. How cool would it be if a group of 4 non-residents came in to hunt and brought 4 more guys with them just to push deer for them? What about just our own seasons? Should we be able to have non-licenced people help drive deer during the bow or shotgun season?

Not everyone participating in that hunt was licenced. I don't have to have my own version of the story... the complete story, stating their own guilt is published in North American Whitetail.

If you are even going to reply, base it on facts, not BS you heard from a local. I don't know how to make it any clearer to you... GENE WENSEL WROTE A STORY DETAILING A HUNT IN WHICH HE USED ILLEGAL MEANS TO SHOOT A DEER.

You know what I like the best? At the end of the article he says, quote: "Some dreams do come true. To know I accomplished it 'my way' is just icing on the cake." When he says "my way", does he mean illegally?
