Traditional Bummer

Well............ Since I've been messing with 60 or so year old bows. I sort of expected something bad to happen.

Just not so soon. I had made a string and wrapped the handle of my second, vintage longbow. As I was drawing it last night I heard a faint cracking sound, then SNAP!

Real Bummer! I'm sure with your antler restoring skills you'll be able to make it look good again, but I'd say it is headed for the disabled list.

I've glued it back together and hopefully will be shooting it Saturday.

Matt, Yes, it is signed by Leonard Lee Rue.
Ron, No injuries. It just sort of collapsed slowly.
Ken, You realize, don't you, that you broke it first?

Thankfully, the finger joints seperated without splintering. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Good job putting it back together. If the glue was dry enough to seperate then the limbs may be pretty dry as well. You might want to just string it and not draw it and leave it sit strung arround a shower for a day or so to help it rehydrate and to let the belly wood compress again. Then just draw to half draw a few times gently before a full draw to retrain the limbs to flex properly. Good luck!

I've decided to leave it clamped up for at least 48 hours. When it comes out I'll post a pic.
Bowmaker, I had been half drawing it for a couple evenings, slowly getting back further. I'll string it and leave it by the shower for a day or two when it's unclamped. Thanks for the tip.

The "Rue" bow is alive and well

After regluing the splice that had let go, I cleaned off the excess glue, then gave that area a couple coats of tongue oil to protect the area I had sanded.
Then the bow sat next to the shower through four steamy showers over 36 hours.

Headed out this afternoon and shot about 50 arrows out of her and so far, so good.
Looks like I may of gotten lucky this time.
