Traditional? NO??

Got a question for everyone here. I've been contemplating taking up traditional archery and putting the compound away for a while. Am I crazy for trying it? I've heard of guys starting out with recurves and longbows & then going to compounds but rarely do I hear them going to the primitive style bows afterwards. I know it's an entirely different aspect but it's always intrigued me. Shall I stick with the lightning fast compound or slow things down a little?

Well heres something that I can relate to . I have been back and forth a couple of times between the recurve, longbow and the compound. I always felt uncomfortable using a sight on my bow and really did not like all the machanics of it,(spring rest,Stabilizer, peep sight , release,Etc.) I bought a recurve off ebay and liked it so much that I wouldnt even consider going back to a compound, It's just my preference but I like the string on my fingers, I shoot off the shelf without a rest at all and I buy the components and build my own cedar arrows. My shots are limited to around 20 yards but that suits me fine. I think that because I like it more it helps me to be a better hunter. I have actually killed more and bigger deer than I ever did with a compound. There is a simplicity about the traditional stuff but it takes alot of dedication time and practice to become proficient at it. I don't know if thats the type of reply you were looking for but thats my way of looking at the traditional angle.

I call it progression toward regression and a lot more people are afflicted every year. As compounds and all the other gear become more and more advanced a lot of the excitment and thrill and challenge falls away and going backwards is one way to get it back. I made my first bow in 1995 and have only shot a conpound a couple shots since then. I don't take a deer every year with a stickbow but when I do ,with stuff that I have made myself, it's quite a rush. I'm not a great bow shot but at 15 or 20 yards I will shoot as many 8s as compound shooters will shoot 10s or 12s and a good 8 will kill any deer just as dead. Also if I do hit a 10 or 12 I can really celebrate where the others grumble it they miss a 10. Give yourself a real chance like maybe a couple years and if you really don't like it you can always switch back and it is hard to tell what compounds will be like then. Just remember back when you were little and learned to ride a bike using training wheels and as you got older you got rid of them, well the same goes for bows. Just have fun that's the main thing.

I think it is a good goal to set for yourself in making a harvest with traditional methods. I wish you the best.

been thinking about picking up a gamemaster and give that a shot sometime. need a bow for the traditional shoots

don't do it firedog! it will only turn your inttrest into a burning need, that is damn tough to control

I went from wheels to stick about 10 years ago. Will never go back. There's definitely a right and wrong way to go about it. If you get started on the right foot, you'll love it, if not you will HATE it.

Would be happy to give some tips on what worked for me.

Tee,
I shot a Gamemaster a while back. Was really suprised that I had no adjustments to make. It threw a nice arrow, grouped as well with that bow as I did my own.

I wouldn't hesitate one bit in making that one my first go at trad.

It will force you to become a better hunter. I say go for it! You can always go back the to the scooter!

I have also been playing with recurves for the past few years. There is a feeling to me like nothing I can explain to watch the arrows flight. I know as soon as I release whether it is a good shot or not. Its something I think will be different to each person.
I take my recurve and cedars shed hunting and my buddies and I do a little stump shooting at the same time. I have not totally commited myself to hunting purely with the recurve do to a confidence barrier, but the past few journeys into the woods it has been with me. I think the ultimate confidence will come after a well placed shot through the vitals. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE

I say go for it, also the guys over at tradgang.com are great people, everytime I visit that site I leave inspired to hunt with a bent stick!
