Trail camera/bait question law

Hardcorehunter

UL Shelter/Stove Geek
For guys that put bait out for their trail cameras, what is Iowa law on how far a hunter must be from the baited area to legally hunt? Iowa regs seem vague in the paper hand out at the stores. Thanks.

I was told that if you hunted any trail that could lead to the area that the bait was with in 200 yards it was not legal.

I think the question that a CO will base his decision on is "Does the bait in question give an unfair advantage to the hunter?" and if the answer is yes then you will get a ticket. I believe the COs have some discretion in the application of the rule.

i heard u have to stay away double of what u shoot like a bow 50yard max is 100 yrds and muzzle at 100 yards max is 200 yards... but im not sure so i could be wrong

I say leave the bait at home during the season. I will put corn out by my cameras after the season is over. No reason to have an issue.

I had a question last winter about shed traps and the co I talked to told me there was the possibility that hunters would no longer be able to use bait to get trail camera pictures. He told me that there was talk to make all feeding of deer illegal in Iowa, and bait in front of cameras would be considered feeding. I haven't heard anything about it since though.

This never became law last year but will more than likely be introduced again this year in some form. Register at www.iowawhitetailsforever.com to stay intouch and involved with legislative issue that effect your deer hunting.

I live in MN and don't have the privilege of hunting Iowa every year. The deer hunting in this state is fubar. I understand what you are saying though.
