Thanks for the responses. Both of these trees lie in an area that I'm planning on opening up for a small plot. Just wanted to know what I was cutting down before I ran in there with a chainsaw.

Thanks.

Cut em down! I go pretty aggressive on bitternut hickory on my place cause they don't do much good. That's me though, not eradicating them but I sure will never hesitate to kill em if they are competing with anything else or I want to thicken an area. I do like shagbark but in my case to some degree, I'm overloaded with those so they are a slightly different story- like keeping some nice straight ones.

We've got a BUNCH of shagbark's too, and I kind of like 'em. At the same time, this place is SOLID woods, and I'm trying to open up a few areas for plots. These pics are from a real cool creek bottom area, should be a killer spot with a little work.

I'm trying to keep "variety" as far as the trees are concerned, so I didn't want to hack down something before knowing exactly what it was.

Check out Dbltree's bedding & hinge cutting threads. Some nice shagbarks are great. But- most the time, there's way too many and they make great hinging trees. It's a personal choice and also could be looked at as trying to create some "balance" but that's for every landowner to decide. I sure wouldn't hesitate to hinge or cut some out but that's me.
