Tree Stand Height

Just wondering. What is the typical height at which you guys hang your stands. I have noticed on hunting shows that it seems those guys get away with a lot more movement than I do. They don't seem very careful as to when they draw etc... I usually get between 15-18 feet. How high does everyone go?

I think a lot of it depends on the terrain you are hunting. Most mine are 12-15 feet up but on certain instances where there may be a trail on a slope and you are below it you would want to go higher to get above that. The last thing you want is the deer walking bye from a distance and being able to look over directly in line with you....

i average 20 - 25 ft. Getting above 20 makes all the difference in the world.

If you do go higher i.e.,20-25 feet, make sure you get up tat high to practice the angle of shots.....I do agree being higher is better but in my instance where I hunt in Iowa you don't have to be that high,or at least would be a pain in the butt trying to put a stand up that far...

It does kind of depend on the terrain. Under normal circumstances I tend to hang my stands at a least 20 feet up sometimes nose bleed section. I am currently hunting on a food plot and have my stand at least 35 feet up maybe 40.

It does take some getting use to hunting that high though. You can easily underestimate yardage when hunting that high, but I never get busted when hunting really high. Makes it worth hunting high when you have mature does and bucks come through and never see you. If you have good cover around you don't have to hunt high, but I don't get that lucky to find them kind of trees normally.

I hunt as high as the tree will let me, some areas there isnt crap for trees and i cant get as high as i like, or some trees i could get super high but there is a good crotch for cover so i put it there, generally at least 20 feet, sometimes 30 it just all depends on the tree and the cover that is available in that tree. this year i shot my buck at only about 15 feet but it was a big pine tree with lots of cover and i couldnt get any higher because the tree made a wierd bend, so it just depends on the tree, high as possible for me

15-20 for portable stands and 15-25 feet for the climber. Portable stands I feel better about sitting lower. You can stand up against the tree a little easier and blend in better. Pay attention to your movement and draw at the right time and you shouldn't have any problems.

I feel hunting really high you get a poor angle on a deer. Double lung shots are tougher to pull off at that angle.

Call me scared of heights, but I rarely go above 15 feet. I like staying low because of the angles at a deers lungs like deadeye was saying. I've had times when deer could've licked my boots, but I never moved so they didn't know I was there. I also like hunting from the ground without a blind, it just seems like a bigger challenge and more rewarding when you get close to deer at ground level.

high enough to get out of there line of sight. Usually around 20 feet for me.If your real good at shooting at an extreme angle, Id definately say higher is better (at least it cant hurt)but I feel more comfortable shooting from around 20, and have little trouble with deer seeing me. I also always try to set my stand in such a way that the tree remains between me and the deer if at all possible., Hey Baby-g, you must have some serious trees to get you 40 ft up! How can you tell if those little specks on the ground are deer or not? lol

I go as high as the tree and terrain will allow. If I am using my Lone Wolf setup with 4 climbing sticks I can get around 20 feet up. Sometimes terrain features make it so you have to be higher or lower depending on where the deer are coming fom or going to. I also look for tree setups with multiple trunks or trees close together to add to concealment.

Stalker, I can appreciate that challenege.Unfortunately I feel more comfortable being in the air.I think it's being able to see more of what's going on around you.

i prefer 20-25 feet. if i'm using the climber it may be lower so i'll position myself further off the trail i'm hunting then. good angles are critical.

My treestands on the average are about 20 ft high. It seems like when I have set up at lower hights I am spotted easier. I like to be well out of their line of sight. I always wear a safety harness to be on the safe side.
