Tree Stand Portability Question

For those of you who carry in a stand every time you hunt I want to know:

1.) If you use a climber or a portable stand?
2.) What model?
3.) If climber, do you have a portable you can carry in and out?
4.) If portable, do you have a climbing stand?
5.) If portable what do you use to get up the tree with?

Also reasons you use a climber over a portable and sticks or the portable and sticks over a climber would be great.

THANKS ALL!!

Lone Wolf Alpha Hang-on!

I really think there are advantages and disadvantages to both, but for me, the advantages of the portable stand with the sticks out weighs the advantages of a climber.

The main reason I use the alpha hang on with the Lone Wolf sticks is that I can get up about any tree that I want to. It doesn't matter if it is straight, crooked or has limbs.

Just to add to what I have already written. I was a die hard set the stands two to three months ahead of time. One year I think Greenhead and I set 22 stands. Now that I use the LW I really enjoy the go in and set up type hunting. Never would you have convinced me that was the way to go until I used one. When I was talking to OneCam about them he claimed that sometimes he relys on his too much and after using one I can see what he means. I am getting ready to dump some of my stands because I just don't hang them any more... Keep and eye on the new classified section soon!

I am almost to the point I would rather give up my Mathews for a Hoyt than give up my LWolf...Naaaaah!

I think a hunter ought to have both at his/her disposal. A climber can be faster, if there are any suitable trees nearby, or trees that have been prepared ahead of time. I would prefer to hang portable stands well in advance, and then carry the sticks in when its time to hunt, in order to minimize noise and weight.

You really only need maybe one climber, but you ought to have as many portable stands as you can afford and use.

I use a Lone Wolf hang-on and 10 sharp steps, not the cheap ones. I buy a new set of steps every year and the old ones get retired to a fixed stand if I want to leave it in one spot. Im not a fan of the climbing sticks.

Dad has 50 acres and that is what I hunt most of the time. For that piece of land dad has more homemade portable stands then we probably need. If muddy and I get to hunt together we can even start to double some tree's up for filming. We have homemade ladders that we chain to the tree also. That works great. We usually hunt the same trees year after year. I will take the climber now and then during the rut if I find a hot spot. Worked last year.

However, I was thinking about hunting some land closer to Dubuque and was thinking about the sticks and portable stand. Our portable stands are way to heavy. I really like the safety in the climber, but it takes a good tree to be able to use it in. I was just wondering how many people like the portable stand idea better than the climber idea.

Anybody use the Summit Mega Bucks Headhunter Lite Treestand? Looks like a decent stand and cheaper than the LW.

Just bought my first Lone Wolf Hang On at the Wisc. Deer show and am really anxious to use it! Normally I move my stands around from year to year, but then leave them up all year. But I want to be able to move with the deer this year, so did some research and decided on the LW. The wife wouldn't give in and let me take the sticks though. So I will be using steps.

Limb Chicken... which hanging method do you use, the ez hang hook system or the v-bracket?

I bought this stand thinking I would put several ez hooks up in trees - then just carry the stand in with me, but heard the stand is more stable with the v-bracket.

I use, and absolutely endorse, Non-Typical hang on stands; using the Non-Typical Rapid Rails to ascend a tree. The best treestand/climbing system on the market. No doubt.

I've just started using the LW with Sticks at the end of last season. Last year I used an Oldman Climber most of the season. Great stand very stable but it is no where as versatile as the portable with stick. You can hang a Lonewolf almost anywhere. I'll never pack a climber again. I already like the V bracket method for hanging the stand. It hangs so easy I can’t see anything convenient about multiple hooks.

I carry in all the time and use the strap on steps instead of sticks. Sticks work fine but the strap ons are easier to carry and are extremely quick and quiet to put on.

adamo,
I use the hook system. I teather the sticks together so I can climb and hang the sticks. I have the hook in my leg pocket and the stand on my back and continue up the tree. Wrap the hook and tighten it hang the stand put the second strap on and climb up. Pull my backpack and bow up and I am in like a bitin sow! The V bracket is fine however I have a hard time trying to hold the stand in place while I wrap the strap around the tree. I have several hooks I hang on trees I use over and over which saves time as well. Both systems are rock solid. I would give the nod to the V bracket if I were trying to get into a crooked tree.

I have also filled my LW sticks with "good stuff" which is basically just foam insulation. It added less than a pound to the weight and there is no metallic sound if they happen to bang together. Do yourself a favor and save for the sticks they are worth ever penny.

Limb, are the LW climbing sticks and stand hard to set up/take down in the dark?

Your a regular McGiver Limb. I suppose you use bailing twine and #9 wire for your bow string and cables too.

Kat,
After doing it a couple of times it isn't too bad. The stand is no big deal. The only thing I had to remember about the sticks was to line up the top and bottom V bracket so they seat together like they are suppose to. I use a little blue light clipped to my hat if I happen to get caught in the tree for a while.

Rudd,
Yea the string and the cables were no problem... My son got mad though when I took one of the back wheels off his tricycle for the idler wheel...

last year I got a twisted timber treestand, these things rock, you find the place you need to hunt and just hang it even if all the trees are crooked! If your a serius hunter dont head into the woods with out one! I use screw in steps.
