Trenton's 2014 Turkey!

Well, we are 2 for 2 on consecutive hunts and the 2nd hunt only took 25 minutes. Hayden got us started by shooting his first turkey on the 2nd day of the season. Due to work schedule we couldn’t get out until this afternoon. I wasn’t too excited about going since it was cold, windy, and I was hurting from a dentist appointment. But when Allison and Trenton got home they were begging………so off we went.

We left the truck at 5:15 pm and headed to the area just below where Hayden shot his bird. I figured that the turkeys would be low and out of the wind so we headed to an area where two creek lines cross dividing the field into 4 quadrants. As we slipped in a draw that one of the creeks flows through, we kicked up a hen that was right in front of us. She flew east and I feared that she might blow it for us. As we were about 80 yards off the field edge I used the fan from the B Mobile, hoping that it would calm a bird if it saw us before we saw them. It worked. Trent spotted a gobbler across the creek to the east about 120 yards away and he was watching us. I turned the fan left to right and he slowly walked into the cover to the north. We slipped ahead to the field edge and set up at a creek crossing.

We were set up at 5:50 pm and I made a few yelps to let our presence be known. At 6:15 pm I yelped and a Tom gobbled the east, very close. I looked out the side of the blind and saw that he was in the field and only 40 yards away. He didn’t look very aggressive and I feared that he would walk by with no shot if we didn’t do something to get in position for the shot. We shifted in the blind and Trent stuck the gun out the side. At 25 yards Trent dropped his 6th Turkey of his hunting career, pretty impressive for a 12 year old boy.

When you hunt with kids there is never a dull moment. This photo caught the reaction to Trent passing gas on Allison’s leg.:D

Alison is up and we are planning to head out tomorrow afternoon. I have a bow tag as well but I'd rather get Allison her bird and then maybe look at getting my nephew a tag. We'll see how long it takes to get Allison a shot. Could we really be lucky enough to get three birds in three days of hunting????????????

Congrats Trenton. Great story and pictures. Thanks for sharing. Best of luck on 3 for 3.

Great work by all parties involved! It's a great joy to take kids hunting and it sounds like you have been extremely successful which is the icing on the cake.
