The Hunt Never Ends....
For those who would rather watch the video; 'Passing On The Tradition'

A few months back my stepbrother, Kevin, who is 11 years old, asked if I would take him deer hunting. I immediately was excited that he asked, and jumped all over the opportunity as I knew I would be introducing a new comer to hunting as well as get in the deer woods sooner than usual. Kevin was excited for the hunt, and was also well prepared as he practiced on several different occassions before the season. Last Sunday (September 16th), I picked Kevin up and we headed to the deer woods. TP Staff member Cody Bonner agreed to video, and the stage was set for a great hunt. Although Kevin was not going to discriminate as to what he shot, we knew that there we some big deer in the area, including AJ, a giant buck that I know all too well. We saw plenty of deer, but none were close enough for Kevin to shoot.

Monday brought cooler temps and light rain, and we knew that the conditions were great for Kevin to fill his tag. We decided to try a different area, one in which we knew quite a few deer were frequenting in daylight hours based off of our trail camera pictures. We did not have a blind set up, so we opted to position ourselves on the back side of a terrace overlooking a field that we knew deer had been feeding in. After cutting some branches to brush ourselves in, we anxiously waited for what the evening would offer us. We didn't have to wait long, and Cody caught movement on top of the hill. It was a big doe, and she was feeding our way. When she reached 200 yards, he slow pace turned into a full our sprint, and she didn't come to a stop until she had ran completely past our setup. She was now on the same side of the terrace as we were, leaving us with no cover and slim odds of getting a shot at her. Kevin and I worked together, and slowly but surely Kevin positioned in himself to make a shot. At 65 yards, Kevin put a perfect shot on her with his 20gauge equipped with iron sights. She only made it 40-50 yards before collapsing in the field we were set up in. Kevin was elated!

This experience was one that I don't think Kevin or myself will ever forget. There is nothing like introducing someone to the sport that we all love, and hopefully, positively influencing someones life for years to come. If I had to guess, I think we have another deer hunter on our hands.

You are doing it right man. It's great to see people sharing what they know and getting youngsters excited about the outdoors. well done:way:
