Trouble with my Slick Tricks

I need to ask you guys a question. I have been hunting with NAP Spitfires for many years with good success. They fly same as my field points and I have had very good luck with clean kills. I am going hog hunting in about 3 weeks and wanted to switch to a fixed point for the hogs. I went to Slick Tricks because I heard good things about them and they were supposed to fly same as a field point.

My problem is, they don't. I can shoot a pretty good group with them, but they are about 6 inches left. It really bugs me to have to move the pins, and am thinking about trying a Magnus Stinger to see if I can get them to fly same as a field point. Any suggestions?

I am shooting a Hoyt Power Tech at 65 pounds with Axis arrows. I use a pretty heavy arrow and have always shot 125 grain heads.

Thanks,

I shoot them also and I guess the only question I have is that are your broadheads spinning true with your arrow shaft? ( really dont worry about this with expandables)

Is your center shot correct and your knock travel level.

Fixed blades will amplify your bow defects to the ninth degree. (Not saying that you have any)

If you cant get them to work, I wouldnt see why a expandable wouldnt work on a hog, that is what I am doing now and the guy I hunt with said my 2-blade rage would work fine or my slick tricks (just wanted to see how the rages performed on hogs, no luck so far with a shot)

I have been having good luck with the 100 gr. slick tricks. They group right in there with field points while my old muzzy's are about 4" off. Maybe you can change your fletching to provide more spin. I use the 2 inch blazers with good success.

Thanks for answering my questions. I really can't figure this out. I can get them to group (at least most of the time) but they are consistently left. I know my bow is set up pretty good as I just took it to a shop and had it tuned. My field points are shooting really well.

Is it possible that I am putting torque to the bow that is effecting the broadheads and not the field points? If that is the case would going to a Magnus Stinger make any difference?

Wish I could kill a hog with field points. I can get them to shoot real good. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

IM in the same boat as tree rat. I was shooting 4in quik spins and 4in feathers amd my muzzys would shoot right or left compared to field points. Retractables were right on. I switched to the 2.25quik spin speed hunters. Which are the Blazer vane with a lip on the edge I think and they shoot bullets with every fixed point I have shot so far.

I wouldnt think you are shooting your broadhead different than your field points, unless your really thinking about it when your shooting.

Good luck

Dean

Without seeing your form I really couldnt tell you if you are torqueing your bow, it is possible though.

You could try the Magnus and they could fly just fine.....but you didnt answer one of my question that I am curious about and that is...

Are your Broadheads spinning true with your arrow shafts? This is a huge problem with fixed blade broadheads and most can be corrected by turning the washer on the broadhead itself then tightening down. (You wont have this problem with field points)

This is when the Broadhead itself actually wobbles and make it seem the shaft is bent in a way and will cause severe arrow planning.

Also are you getting any fletching contact with your rest?

Im taking your word that your rest is setup correctly and isnt actually launching your arrow at a angle and the fletching cant correct your arrow in the amount of time.

What distance are your trying this at, and will it change the farther you get from the target?

I had the bow checked by a bow shop that I was unfamiliar with who told me that it was set up fine. I believed him, however was still not satisfied with the way it shot the broadheads.

Last night I happened to be in my local big box store,(Bass Pro) and saw a kid that used to work at the shop where I bought the bow. That shop has closed since I bought the bow. I knew this kid was pretty good with bows so I asked him to look at it. Long story short, he thought that the knock point was about a half inch high and that the rest was slightly off horizontally. He put a new server on the string and made the adjustments, however I have not had the chance to shoot it yet. Oh, by the way, I am basing this on 30 yards. I can shoot the field points comfortably at 40, but not the broadheads.

He also told me that my arrows were spined too heavy. I shoot Axis arrows, 300 weight. I should be shooting 340's. I checked the spin and I think it's OK, but I will move the washer and see what happens.

He also suggested Quick Spin fletching, and I was ready to jump in until I saw the price. Twenty bucks for one package. It seems they are pretty proud of their product. I will do it if I didn't get any improvement with the adjustments he made. I will also go to the lighter arrow, as I lose and break my current supply. In the meantime, if I still shoots left, I will move the pins.

Thanks for the reply s.

Im trying to have you check the stuff that is a easy fix, but dont change your fletching, Im glad the other shop found these other issues which could have major effect on arrow flight.

Good job on getting another opinion from another shop

I had a chance to shoot the bow last night after getting it worked on. The changes made to it helped, now its shooting only a couple of inches left of the field points. I can live with it and will move the pins slightly to compensate.

Having used mechanicals for many years I had forgotten how a fixed blade will amplify your mistakes down range. A slight mistake on my part will really show up on the target. I was thinking about staying with the Slick Tricks for deer this fall, but I might go back to my Spitfires.

I have another question and I probably should start another thread, and I will if no one sees this question.

What broadhead target are you guys using. I have a Morrell that isn't too bad, but I think there might be better choices out there. I have really sliced and diced it with this issue with the Slick Tricks. What has been working for you guys?

Thanks,

I love my Morrell target. Great price and a great target for broadheads. I would rather shoot into it than my Block, broadheads can really do a number on it before too long.
