Turkey Nest ?

On a turkey nest will the hen come back if she was kicked from it and then shot at? My buddy who has never been turkey hunting was shroom hunting and kicked a hen from her nest and when she was almost out of the timber he peppered her backside. Didnt knock her down or anything, i went over to where she was and there was a nest of 18 eggs. This all happened Sun. Went back today and some where missing (not hatched) but they were covered up with dead leaves and grass. Do they do this when it is about hatching time or should I intervean and grow the eggs myself so the rodents dont get to them? Please help i would like all of them to survive beens I kind of caused the issue. Thanks

I think I'd tell your buddy to make sure of his target first off. Secondly I'd stay out of her specific area, one way to make sure she don't nest there is to keep going back and checking, even if your intentions are good.

What the heck is he shooting at a hen for?

The hen won't abandon the nest as long as she isn't disturbed again...

I dont think I would want to be in the same woods with your buddy. Sounds like he wants a turkey so bad that he would shoot at anything that moves in the brush. You might want to wear full ORANGE CAMO when you are with him. He is a accident waiting to happen.

The Hen thing is that a turkey looks like a turkey when watching it fly away. His first time out. He ticked me off the next day hunting so needless to say he will find a new place to turkey hunt next year. Already done.

A Turkey looks like a Turkey? To shoot a Turkey in the spring, a beard must be seen, a male Turkey must be identified before the shot. Not only is the Hen probably wounded and will die a needless death the eggs will probably never develop and a whole brood will be lost

Dont cut my throat, i wasnt the one doing the shooting! I know what the law states. There is nothing that i can do about the situation except try to make it better and try to save the little ones. That is the point I am trying to make by making this post. I want to know if i should intervean and raise them myself or she will come back and take care of her nest, that is all I am asking not for all of you to cut my nuts off about the situation. Thanks.

Wasn't trying to "cut your nuts off" or "cut your throat" I just did not want you or your friend to not see the significance of what was done, the fact that you did not come down on him extremely hard after he did it, leads me to believe that you did not think it was that big of a deal ie: "peppered her backside". Each spring some idiot is not "sure" of his/her target and someone gets hurt, I think we owe it to the sport to make sure there are no accidents or similar incidents. At a minimum what your friend did was extremely stupid, could also be considered unsafe, and most definitely illegal. If he did not take the time to make sure of the sex of the Turkey, I'm sure he never took time to make sure he was shooting in a safe direction etc.

Muddy and Ghost answered your question regarding the nest, they know what they are talking about, so listen to what they said.
