Turkey Scope

THA4

A Few Steps Ahead Of You
I am interested in getting a Scope for my 870 to use during turkey season. I think my wife would shoot better with a scope, well i know she will..... I dont mind using one either, so putting one on my shotgun seems like a good option!

What types of scopes do you guys shoot, and what would you recommend for an 'inexpensive' yet effective turkey scope.
and....
what else will i need to purchase along with the scope....(i know nothing about these things) all advice is appreciated!!!

Thanks!

I don't know about inexpensive but Bushnell Holosight is great for turkeys. If you can't quite get the gun nestled in perfect but you can see the sight you can shoot.

does wally world carry those??

yes, im looking to go as cheap as possible....

I think you should really think about this. I really think that a scope really limits you in the turkey woods. Also, in low light situations that cheap glass might bite ya.

thanks Nick!
but the scope is for my wife as she shoots better with one. trust me, without it, birds go free /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

i have thought about this.....
i know she could, but sheesh, killing a blur with a bow is a big deal....

that might be a good idea and one i may consider!!!

however, thanks Blaster, just what i was looking for!

i like the idea of a red dot

here is my whole reason behind a scope.
My wifes shooting form is struggling to say the least, not follow through, just getting her head down and aiming.

she doesnt like shooting guns because she isnt very good at it. and i suck at teaching.....sooooo

this will be for turkey hunting purposes only, this will force her to get her head down while shooting..... or at the least improve her accuracy. (cant see through the scope and aim appropriately without your head being in the right spot.....

she is not interested upland, waterfowl or deer hunting with a gun so this would be a turkey investment only.

however with the way she shoots her bow, i may consider going that route any how.

so, yes, a Red Dot scope has crossed my mind. what is good??

I have many red dots and love them for hunting. This is the best one i have found for the price. Sportsmans has this same scope for $88. I just bought one last week. Put the dot on the head and the turkey is dead!!! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
Scope

I had a red dot and yanked it. But it was because I didnt feel like I could shoot a running bird with it. But I switched to Bow only when I was 16 soooooooo doesnt matter..

But I had the above red dot. I thought it was nice. If you get a red dot you need to make sure that you can dial it down so the dot is small and not a giant blur. pick up a 30 dollar simmons or something and you will know what you do not want..

But in all honesty. If she is used to a scope than she should stick with that. Think about it. If you pattern her/your gun and get that in the center of the pattern it should be easy. Say your pattern is 15 inches wide at 20 yards. The scope is going to cover 3/4 inch of the birds neck at that distance. There will be a lot of room for a trigger yank still resulting in a dead bird.

Stick with a low power and I dont think you can go wrong. you probably wont find one with an objective bigger than 32mm but it will be fine.

Hell She kills everything already, I dont know why your in such a rush to help her out do ya!! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

ALSO... this will be her first year turkey hunting right?? bowhunting does throw in a lot of stress and hassles. just something to remember. BUT also will allow for 4 seasons of quality bonding. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif Maybe you could rig up a diaper changing station that hooks up to the double bull and make it a family affair!! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

hahaha
i could be a millionare after that idea....

this will be her second year, but last year we only spent 3 days in the blind together...
so this will be like her first year....
getting birds in close shouldnt be a problem, but bowhunting does add stress....
hence me looking for a scope....

thanks for all the advice guys, hopefully she can put one down this year!!

I have never shot a running birds but have been on two hunts were the person I was calling for shot a runner. Canat tell me you have never had a bird spook when in close. granted we should of took the shot by then.

That was before I crossed onto the dark side.... :p
