Turkeys

Since my turnip plots are nothing more than bare dirt right now I am thinking of seeding something relatively soon this year that would grow quickly and help hold the gobblers on my farm. Last year they were over the fence almost all Spring in what I think was winter wheat.

What would you plant now to provide for good Spring turkey action this Spring?

I am going to frost seed clover into my existing turnip (mine field) patch. If it does well, I'll leave it and move the annual plot.

Turkey's love fresh tilled dirt in the spring for either feeding or strutting. I've found it doesn't really matter what you plant - just having the dirt tilled will help draw them. One idea would be clover with oats as a nurse crop - they both get up green pretty quick and can be planted very early.

I know the turkeys will come to just bare dirt, I scared about 15 toms off of one of my "food plots" the other day. I don't know if they were just scratching or what, but they will come to bare dirt.
