Turnips need lots of sunlight and nitrogen... the seed is cheap and worth a shot if you're up for it. You'd be better off broadcasting rye and oats in the timber.
Got any pictures of the location or any idea how much sunlight it gets?
I don't think it would work...but, if you took a garden tiller or disc and did what you could to work up an area, turnips/brassicas do well in the middle of wooded areas as long as they get some consistent sun.
I broadcasted a mix of some stuff I had laying around that had some turnips in it. I broadcasted it over a disked lane and around it where it wasnt disked with a lot of timber canopy and the turnips are growing like weeds. I did it back in april when weeds werent up yet so that may have helped them get started. The turnips are doing better than the clover that was in the mix anyway.
I am leaving some soybeans stand all year... I plan on broadcasting some turnip seeds in between the rows... Does anyone know when i should plant them?
Your best bet is to broadcast some radishes and/or rye in August or September just when the leaves start turning on your soybeans... or at least that's what we've been told and plan on doing!
