The Hunt Never Ends....
This year marked the third season in a row that I would be taking my cousin Ty on a youth season turkey hunt. We were hunting a new farm, so we roosted the birds the night before.
By daybreak on Friday morning we were sitting within 100 yards of five big roosted toms. As the sun started to rise, the woods erupted in gobbles. Everytime that Ty or I called, the toms would gobble right back. It wasn't long before we had three big toms sprinting into our set-up, gobbling the whole way.
Ty wanted to get the whole hunt on video, so I had one of my friends bring along the video camera. As the toms reached thirty yards, my friend, Jeff, who was videotaping whispered to us, "It's too bright, I can't see the birds." I told Ty to shoot anyways if he wanted too, but he insisted he wanted them on video.
By now the Toms had walked to within 15 yards of my left, and stood there spitting and drumming, and gobbling up a storm. After a couple of minutes the birds lost interest and started walking away from us. I whispered to Jeff that the nightshot was probably still on, and he said "Oh $hit, you're right." By now the toms were about twenty yards directly behind us.
Jeff moved the camera, and Ty swung his gun around the tree, and took a shot at the closest tom. He dropped the gobbler dead in his tracks.
This was Ty's second turkey, and he was pretty excited about it. It weighed 22lbs, had a 10 inch beard, and just under one inch spurs. It was a very exciting hunt, and one neither of us will forget!
