Under growth food plot?

Does anyone have any experience putting in a food plot under trees? It looks like the only spot on the land I have permission to hunt, is on a hilltop flat that is pretty open. There just isn't any place to put a plot in that has direct sunlight, so I'm looking at the only option I've got, which is under trees.

How thick is the canopy? How much sunlight gets through to the forest floor? Is the natural undergrowth in the area thick and lush or is the area wide open with little to no natural undergrowth?

There are several things you can plant is partially shaded area's but even the most shade tolerant stuff is going to need some sunlight.
