Up until now I've always hunted wooded areas, riverbottoms, and over fields. I did some scouting last night and found an area along the river could be classified as woodlands yet, but the area is very wide open and the ground is covered with thigh high grass. I located a few trails through the grass and some scrapes/rubs along the outside, but this area itself does not lend itself further to deer sign. I was wondering if anyone has ever hunted a similar area, or has any insight as to whether it's worth the time.

We hunt river bottom ground also and have some small areas about what you are talking about. Never really hunted those spots, but see deer in it. I think it would be hard to keep your trail scent free in the weeds. Also if it is that green grass stuff tracking a deer is difficult. Any beds??? Deer have been know to bed in that stuff. Another thing - finding a good tree for a stand might be a problem. You know the area and can see the sign. If it looks good try it. Could be a learning experience - good or bad.

I didn't have a lot of time to look around b/c I was trying to look at a few spots, but I just got the feeling that this wasn't a bedding area. I also don't think that it would be problem finding a tree for a stand. Most of the trees have at least a foot diameter. The problem comes more in concealment b/c of the wide open nature of the area. You do make some good points about the scent-free and tracking problems though. Thanks.

Some of our stands are pretty open. Especially when I hunt from the climber - the tree has to be about bare. In the open you can see the deer coming from a lot farther away and can grab your bow and get ready while they are still at a long distance. Then when they are getting close really watch your movement. That is my strategy to not get busted. You have to be heads up in the stand so they don't sneak up on you - then you are in trouble.

that is a good area come shotgun season when bucks are under pressure . but normally i would stay to one side or the other of it where ever the timber stopsit gives you a good background
