Very Unusual

I am hunting a new property and the first time I hunted there the farmer told me of a black deer. I was very skeptical but this morning I saw the black one. It is unbelieveable. I have seen pictures of white ones but never black. Are they legal to shoot? By the way he is a forky.

To my knowledge only white or partly white deer are protected in Iowa. To be safe I'd check with your local conservation officer. I'd love to see that buck as a 5 1/2 year old!

Good hunting!

I know whites and partials are protected but never heard about blacks. I will call my CO but will wait till tommorow. I seriously thought it was a steer from a distance it is jet black. I will give updates from the CO.

What you are seeing is called "Melanism", which is very rare. They say that for every 10,000 albino's there will be one melanistic deer. It's just a gene mutation like the albino but the exact opposite. It would be a very rare trophy for anyone.

He's melanistic, they are rare as albinos if not more so. I never heard of them being protected like all white deer in Illinois & Iowa.
