walk or sit and wait

when you go shotgun hunting for deer what method is better sitting or walking through the woods...wich is better a treestand or a ground blind??i think id rather hunt out of a blind??what are pros and cons like dislikes about blinds for shotgun hunting??thanks alan

It all depends on how you want to hunt. I hunt out of a treestand during shotgun on my property. I hunt out of a treestand more so than a ground blind mostly because I like being up where I can see a long ways. In a ground blind you are usually not able to see as far or as well into the timber and surrounding fields in my situation. Good Luck

Sit and wait, rather it be a ground blind or a treestand, walking up on a deer can be tremendously difficult, even those that are the best at stalks are challenged each and everytime. Being in an elevated position helps, so a treestand would be my first pick, it helps eliminate some of the human scent at ground level, you can see better, and if you are high enough in the tree the deer have a harder time picking you out when you are moving to shoot, etc. I guess you will have to try it out and see which method you like best though

One main thing that I will suggest to you. If you are hunting on public land, PLEASE...PLEASE...I'm begging you, don't be one of those guys who walk around at the best times of the morning and afternoon because your not seeing anything or your uncomfortable. To me, the times one should not be moving around are 1st light to around 9:30-10:00 a.m. and then from about 2:00 until after dark. It happens to me all the time and there is nothing more discouraging to see someone walking around when their butt should be plastered to their tree stand or to the ground somewhere and NOT walking around. I know, there are a lot of 10-2 hunters out there so keep them in mind too.

Main thing, just be respectfull to others in the woods and let's all hope you get that same respect back.

It may sound overly simplistic but one of the primary rules in deer hunitgin in any season is this: When the deer are on the move, you sit. When the deer are not moving you move. Basically, if the deer are up and moving because of forced movement which is often during shotgun season, or chasing during the rut or moving to and from feeding/bedding areas, you position yourself on travel lanes and you wait for them to come to you. If the deer are not moving, you go to them... still hunting, stalking etc.

I do all my slug hunting from treestands and ground blinds...both "homemade" brush blinds and store-bought popup blinds. This season most of the deer my family and I shot were from popup blinds. It was pretty chilly and we used little propane heaters to beat the chill.

I have killed more deer out of treestands than groundblinds in the past. Getting into an elevated position allows you to get better shots (usually) and see better around you. A well placed blind or stand is downright deadly on deer during the slug seasons. Find a good travel corridor and set up in ambush.
