Water source preference?

Looking for a few opinions: Has anyone noticed a difference in preferred types of watering holes? For example: a cattle-trod muddy hole compared to a clean pond, running water compared to stagnant pools, open water or scum covered surface? I tend to consider location first but I've only spent a little time hunting over water.

Thoughts?

I know somebody who bought a cattle tank just to hunt over it. He filled it fresh and shot 1 Buck and 3 does off of it. I called the CO to make sure it was legal and who would have thought of it. They said it was fine, I thought it was pretty creative.

I think water any place they feel comfortable will be a hit, especially this year. Scout the tracks around the water source and if you find what you are after hang and hunt.

If they are anything like my old dog they will pretty much drink any type of water out there. I was scouting two weekends ago and found a dried up creek that had a about a 3ft wide by 8ft long puddle if you will that looked pretty stagnant. It was littered with tracks and I could tell pretty much every trail went right by it. There was more sign right there than I saw around two ponds that were clean looking with few tracks around. Probably why EHD is so bad.
