waterproofing feathers

I think that some time ago this was a topic but I can't remember what anybody said. How do you keep your feathers waterproof? I tried vanes but couldn't get good arrow flight and went back to feathers. With the upcoming turkey season I'd like to have my feathers ready for dewy grass and rain. Thanks

I had this problem with a rainy day we went deer hunting and when I touched my feathers they became messed up to the point I couldn't shoot them anymore. After this experience we went to Central Iowa Archery and Sports and bought a powder like substance that you cover your arrows in and it supposed to make it become waterproof but we never had a chance to try it out in the field on a rainy day.

The powder is called gateway feathers and it cost around $3.50 I think but you might need to check on that.

You might also try the spray that fly fishermen use to keep dry flies dry and buoyant. That's what I have used and it has seemed to work fine. I don't know the name right off, but if you asked at the local fishing tackle store they would know.

The product your wondering about is called " Feather Powder" It runs about 4.50 and will do around 50 arrows. It can be ordered through, Cabela's, but I'm sure just about every other place would carry it as well.

hairspray, that sounds about right for what i'm willing to spend, have to confiscate the wifes spray can after she leaves for work and give it a try on one arrow.

i wonder if silicon leather treatment spray would work also?

There are a number of products that I have used through the years, Bohning Dri-tite, Dry Fly spray, silicones and the newer powders.

It seems to me that the powders probably have less effect on the stiffness of the feather if that really matters.

My best results have been avoiding the situations to get them very wet.

i use OFF the bug repelant, that seems to work VERY well for me, and the smell dont seem to scare off the animals.
