Coldest Air in years, and dangerous windchills of 50 below coming. Sounds like this winter will be one I have heard about from Oldtimers in Iowa. When it is cold one place, it is warm in another, however. Is 45' in Anchorage.

Feb. 3rd 1996 it was -47 just down the road from me at Elkader. I remember it well. Tried to feed the cattle that morning, electric motors wouldn't start even with drive belts off. We had some extreme cold stretches back in the early 80's also. December 1983 was brutal, lots of records set.Dry summers seem to follow cold winters, but let's not go there just yet!!!

Check temperature records for Jan. 1982. We had several days of -30 with 30-40 mph winds. Tree limbs broke and shattered like glass in that wind. With lots of livestock back then, it was brutal. Hogs and cattle wouldn't even come out of the barns to eat.

I have read stories. My Inlaws in their 80s and former farmers, have stories. I come from Lower MI. Everyone thinks it must be way colder up there, but actually the Great Lakes act somewhat like a blanket and usually take some of the edge off. The UP, well that is another story! The dry Summer was mentioned. You might notice almost all the significant moisture, is still being drawn up east of Iowa.

It was chilly yesterday for sure.

I hunted Turkey River Bottom in the morning and my truck said -17 when I got there.

I could only play for 3 hours before heading back in.

Jan. 15th 2009 was a cold day...that's the day I shot my first deer and got frost bite on my hands. Man, that hurt.

Few years back I hunted a morning that was -21 and windy. That was cold. I remember scouting that afternoon and found three dead squirrels that appeared to have froze to death and fell out of the trees. At least that's what I assume. Very strange. Hopefully it isnt as bad as they are predicting.

Yet another big slug of moisture just east and south of Iowa. I am glad, now, I have alot of driving to do. Missing the moisture not a good thing. Specially in a couple a months.

DNR should cancel the shed buck/jan. antlerless/rifle season. This extreme weather is going to make a lot of bucks shed out I'm afraid, not to mention kill off a great many...especially the injured deer and young ones. Hunters won't be needed to do herd damage.

Deer are tough. Nice thing about Iowa, specially SE, is there are breaks in the cold. And the snow is pretty slim most of the time. If the cold keeps up deer might get pretty thin, but should survive. Still they are burning their fat, and gives me more admiration in the animals at how they tough it out. Not to mention those little birds I feed. How do those little balls of fluff survive??? What is a good supplement to help deer out? I know corn is not.
