Weed spraying and nitrogen for food plot

I was going to have the local co-op spray for weeds and apply nitrogen on my 2 acre corn food plot. The bid I got was pricey. To anyone who had done or not done this...is it necessary? Will I have corn or a weed patch this fall?

I don't know a whole lot bout' farming but i bet "if you plant it they will come".

no matter what the yield is. If there is more cover for them between rows I would think that would be a plus. Heck, if ya think about it, there are many farmers that use no til.......

i would say defintitely have to spray it, we've grown some pretty nice weed crops are first year. we have about five acres we put in corn and beans. works pretty well but the deer eat it all by late season. we use a fourwheeler with a sprayer on it to put the weed spray on, and use a hand broadcast seeder to put down the nitrogen pellets. i dont know if you have a fourwheeler or not, but if you do a sprayer for one with a boom works pretty well and you should have no problems with it the rest of your life. we usually put on two coats of weed spray when the corn first comes up then when it is about a foot tall. if you use roundup corn it will turn up really nice. if you get too many weeds it will choke out your food plot and the ears of corn wont be very big, that is what happened to us the first year. and when farmers no till they still have to spray for weeds. so i dont know if this helps but i would say definitely spray for weeds, and put down some nitrogen. seems on our place the amount of does that are there increased dramatically, and every night ten or so does would come to the field and draw in the bucks during the rut, good luck!!!!

I WORK FOR A COOP AND WE DO JUST WHAT YOU WANT. YOU HAVE A COUPLE OF THINGS WORKING AGAINST YOU. FIRST OF ALL THE PRICE OF NITROGEN IS VERY HIGH THIS YEAR COMPARED TO MOST. THIS IS DUE TO HIGH NATURAL GAS PRICES THIS PAST WINTER. THE SECOND THING IS, THIS IS OUR CRUNCH TIME. WE ARE RUNNING RIGS OUR 14-16 HOURS A DAY JUST TO KEEP UP. THESE MACHINES COST AROUND $200,000 AND NEED TO BE RUNNING AND COVERING ACRES TO PAY FOR THEMSELVES. TO TAKE TIME TO DO A 2 ACRE PLOT WHEN THEY COULD BE DOING A 50 ACRE FIELD TAKES MORE TIME. THEY PROBABLY ARE CHARGING YOU A FLAT RATE FOR THE APPLICATION (MY GUESS IS $50 TO 75$) AS COMEPARED TO A USUAL RATE OF $4 TO $6/ACRE. I KNOW THIS SOUNDS HIGH BUT IT REALLY DOES COST MORE TO DO THESE SMALLER JOBS COMPARED TO BIGGER ONES. I HOPE I EXPLAINED MYSELF AND THAT YOU UNDERSTAND. I AM SEEING IT FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE. NO MATTER WHAT THE COST IM SURE THEY WILL DO YOU A GOOD JOB FOR YOU.

P.S. I JUST FIGURED WHAT WE WOULD CHARGE FOR SOMETHING LIKE THAT AND THE TOTAL IS AROUND $175. THAT IS FOR NITROGEN, WEED BURNDOWN, RESIDUAL WEED CONTROL AND APPLICATION. HOPE THIS GIVES YOU SOMETHING TO GO BUY. AS FOR IF YOU SHOULD DO IT, YES!!! IF YOU LET IT GO YOU WILL HAVE NOTHING BUT A 2 ACRE WEED AND GRASS PLOT THAT WILL CHOKE OUT THE CORN.

W-1, I have been putting food plots in for 5 years now and have learned the hard way that all your hard work is for not if you don't control the weeds. I would suggest putting on a solid herbicide package with 75 lbs. of N. This will kill out the competition and feed the corn plant. I had the co-op do this fo $55 an acre. I hope this helps you out! I know how expensive it can get because I have about 35 acres total of corn, beans, and sorghum! Later T$

Huskerbuck, You were on for the price, $173.00 for application for 2acres. $100 was for going to the property. I completely understand your point about time, and size of the plot, etc. I told the coop that the could wait and hit the property when they were in the area, if it would make things cheaper. I don't know what I'll do. I also like LIV4RUT's idea. For the $100.00 delivery fee I can pay for 2/3 of a sprayer on the back of a 4wheeler. I better decide soon
