I went for a walk today and found this leg in a corn field. I noticed the white band across the hoof and the tips of the hooves are frayed. What do you think caused it?

IMO: Likely a leg that was injured and has been carried or dragged rather than walked on for quite a while before it's owner's demise.

I sent the pic to a person in the DNR and they said most likely EHD.

And how would EHD account for the lack of hoof wear on the bottom of the foot? EHD killed a lot of deer this year, but contrary to popular opinion EHD is not responsible for all the dead deer bodies in the world. Unless your DNR contact has had a lot more pathology courses than I have, I respectfully disagree with their opinion. :thrwrck: Chewing his nails makes more sense than EHD.

Ehd does not explain why it was not wore down. Ehd kills fast, but some do survive and grow long ski like hooves, like a foundered ponies hooves get. I think Horsedoctor's guess is more likely.

Wow! Just threw the pic out there for ideas. Not saying anybody is right or wrong.

Pretty sure the deer did not die from EHD according to when and where I found it. I think I would have seen it prior to now if it had died of EHD. I'm guessing it fell victim to coyotes.

You know, running on three legs and all. :D

Ok, like Shovels link mentioned EHD survivors can have their hoof slough off. The end may have sloughed off recently or it was ready to before dying/being killed and the scavengers popped it off. I have had horses slough off a hoof and look like that. Anyone ever see the bottom of a new colts feet or even a calf or fawn? Has the same look untill they walk on it and wear all that soft stuff down.

Not sure if true but I was told even if a deer survives the initial exposure to EHD they still can die from it later in the year, anyone know? I always thought they either died within days or survived with some immunity to it in the future.
